Legendary historical treasures such as the medieval Rappottenstein Castle or the Cistercian Zwettl Abbey attract culture enthusiasts to camp in the Waldviertel. Families and water sports enthusiasts like to choose a campsite in the Waldviertel on one of the clear bodies of water such as the Ottenstein reservoir or the Herrensee lake near Litschau. Dog owners and active holidaymakers make use of the well-developed network of paths and explore deep forests on long hikes.

Special features of camping in the Waldviertel

From the campsites in the Waldviertel in the south of the region, guests are not far from the fascinating landscape of the Wachau. Some of the campsites are located directly on the Danube between Austria's longest river and enchanting vineyards. A little further north, water holidaymakers will find opportunities for swimming, sailing and surfing at the campsites on the Ottenstein reservoir. The campsites on the Dobra reservoir are also recommended for families, with a 400 m long steel cable slide that is a real highlight for the brave. Fantastic campsites can also be found in the north of the holiday region on the Czech border. Dense coniferous forests characterise the unspoilt landscape. The campsites near the medieval town of Waidhofen an der Thaya are also an ideal starting point for hikes and cycle tours.

Best time to travel

Temperatures rise later in spring than in other parts of Austria, especially at the campsites in the Waldviertel in the north, such as near Gmünd and Litschau. From April to October, the maximum average temperatures climb to a pleasant 12 to 23 degrees Celsius. As it can cool down considerably even in midsummer, camping holidaymakers are best advised to pack warm clothing. The months of June to August are ideal for a swimming holiday at the unspoilt lakes. Then the water, which can be up to 25 degrees Celsius, is perfect for splashing around. Whether you can expect frequent rainfall on holiday in the Waldviertel depends on the holiday destination. The east of the Waldviertel is one of the regions with the least rainfall in Austria, while it is significantly wetter in the north and west.
