Lush meadows, wide alpine pastures and cool forests make the hearts of active guests in the Allgäu beat faster. Both challenging tours for athletes and child-friendly routes on flat terrain are available for hikes. Culture vultures love the Allgäu for its medieval towns and castles. After an extended hike or sightseeing tour, head to the sauna or spa at the wellness campsite in the Allgäu
The selection of hiking trails in the Allgäu ranges from family-friendly routes to challenging summit tours. Culture lovers can visit the picturesque towns with their medieval centres.
The Allgäu enchants visitors with numerous art treasures and towns worth seeing. One of these is the renowned spa town of Füssen with its romantic old town centre. On a stroll through the narrow streets, culture vultures will discover numerous town houses from the Middle Ages with colourful paintwork. It is also worth visiting the St. Mang monastery, where you will find a museum with historical instruments. Numerous gates, towers and a well-preserved town wall add to Memmingen's charm. Landmarks include the whitewashed Renaissance town hall and the tower of St Martin's Church, which can be seen from afar.
Wellness camping in the Allgäu takes active holidaymakers out into the beautiful natural surroundings. The holiday region offers an unrivalled network of hiking trails with 876 km of routes. With the Wiesengänger, the Wasserläufer and the Himmelsstürmer, three long-distance hiking trails lead through the Allgäu. You can return to the starting point comfortably by bus or train from the end of various stages. Family-friendly are the trilogy tours, which invite you to get to know picturesque places over distances of three to six kilometres.
The ruins of the high medieval Falkenstein Castle are located on the 1268 metre-high Falkenstein mountain near Pfronten. This makes this romantic castle ruin higher than any other German castle. King Ludwig II of Bavaria even wanted to have a new castle built in its place. The Hohenfreyberg summit castle in Eisenberg is also worth a visit; the castle ruins offer a breathtaking view on a 1040 metre high mountain. One medieval castle in the Allgäu that has been preserved to this day is Kronburg Castle, which is well worth a visit and has an eventful history.
The Allgäu offers a multifaceted programme of events, from sports festivals for those hungry for exercise to atmospheric cattle drives in autumn.
