The French region of Nouvelle Aquitaine has several hundred kilometres of enchanting Atlantic coastline with seemingly endless sandy beaches, hundreds of vineyards nestled in beautiful landscapes, many charming little towns and the famous port city of Bordeaux, which is only about an hour's drive from Lacanau. Culture lovers and wine connoisseurs will enjoy a camping trip here just as much as families and water sports enthusiasts can enjoy swimming, stand-up paddling, sailing or surfing in the Atlantic Ocean - the possibilities are endless in this paradisiacal holiday destination in south-west France.
Whether you prefer a secluded location or close to the beach, the campsites in Lacanau are all well-equipped and family-friendly. Perfectly tailored to personal needs and preferences, there are campsites with sea views and direct access to the beach as well as those in the forest, with a small pool and a programme for young and old. The majority of the pitches are located around the 2,000-hectare inland lake Étang de Lacanau, an ideal starting point for water activities of all kinds, from sailing trips to leisurely splashing around. Shopping facilities, the seaside resort of Lacanau Océan and the sea are all within easy reach - an all-inclusive package. Campsites such as the Airotel l'Océan campsite in Carcans, the Yelloh! The unspoilt terrain offers plenty of retreats for campers. For those who wish to use the bread roll service, the day begins with French pastries and ends with a glass of good local wine at sunset overlooking the Atlantic Ocean or Lake Étang de Lacanau. Two sections of beach, each around 200 metres long, offer pure bathing fun. The ADAC Superplatz offers a wonderful mix of pitches for motorhomes and comfortable mobile homes. The extensive, fine sandy beach is within easy walking distance and, in combination with the extensive range of sports and leisure activities on offer, boredom is certainly not an option. The campsite is perfectly geared towards families with children in particular and offers a comprehensive range of facilities to ensure that young and old alike feel at home. The site offers numerous beautiful rental accommodations and shady pitches surrounded by a pine forest. The campsite's tropical adventure pool with several swimming pools, slides, wave pool and whirlpools offers pure bathing fun. The Atlantic coast is also just 800 metres away. The range of entertainment and services is huge with a discotheque, open-air theatre, wellness facilities, entertainment area and much more.
Depending on the starting point, the journey is between 1,200 and 1,700 kilometres. Departing from northern or central Germany, the journey first runs through Belgium and then mainly via the A1 and A10 motorways on the French side. Paris is an attractive stopover here. If you prefer a more tranquil journey, you can also take a breather in Tours, which is about halfway between Paris and Lacanau. Travellers from southern Germany first head to Stuttgart and then past Strasbourg towards the A89, which leads straight to Lacanau from Clermont-Ferrand. Lyon is the ideal choice for travellers who want to stop for the night. The Aire de Service des Volcans d'Auvergne, located on the A71 motorway just after Vichy, is an attractive rest stop with an idyllic panoramic view of the Massif Central. Particularly in summer, especially in July and August, you can expect a lot of traffic, especially from the border, as the whole of France is on holiday during these two months and the south is also an attractive destination for locals. If you want to avoid both the traffic jams and the tolls, you can let your navigation system guide you along the picturesque country roads. Alternatively, those travelling without a motorhome or caravan can fly to Bordeaux Airport and start their camping holiday in Lacanau from there in a hire car or rented motorhome.
The campsites in and around Lacanau offer an ideal starting point for all kinds of activities. The Aquitaine region is particularly known for its beautiful coastline, which is ideal for beach holidays and water sports, and the picturesque inland with its many vineyards. From (cycle) hiking to golf and day trips, this destination leaves nothing to be desired.
Every Wednesday morning, a market stretches across the streets of Lacanau Océan, making hearts beat faster. Here, holidaymakers can find regional delicacies as well as handmade goods, gifts and textiles. Afterwards, you can enjoy the view of the water with a crêpe in your hand or take part in the entertainment organised on the beach promenade in high season. From here, visitors also have the best view of the two spectacular firework displays on 14 July and 15 August.
Around 78 kilometres south of Lacanau is the largest shifting sand dune in Europe. Once you have successfully mastered the steep ascent to 110 metres, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the sea and the surrounding forests.
45 km west of Lacanau, culturally interested holidaymakers will find the port city of Bordeaux with the imposing Place de la Bourse, the historic Saint-André Cathedral and many other unique sights.
French cuisine is known and loved all over the world. In addition to classics such as quiche and macarons, holidaymakers here in the south will find many hearty dishes, especially with duck. For dessert, there are the typical local cannelés, a small pastry, caramelised on the outside and flavoured with vanilla and rum on the inside - a culinary delight that will stay with you for a long time.
In July and August, temperatures in Lacanau average between 17 and 25 degrees Celsius. At the same time, the likelihood of rain is lowest in these two months: Ideal conditions for a summer holiday by the sea, as the water is always around 22 degrees Celsius. In spring and late summer, you can enjoy the glorious weather on long walks along the lakeshore or in the forest. From March to May and from September to November, the thermometer still shows temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celsius. Whether you are passing through for a long weekend or a two-week holiday, camping in Lacanau is an unforgettable experience from spring to autumn. Surfers should not miss the annual Lacanau Pro competition in August. For those who love peace and quiet, a period outside the main season is ideal.
