The French municipality of Châteauroux-les-Alpes is located in the Hautes-Alpes department, which is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The town fascinates holidaymakers with its location directly in the Écrins National Park, which is particularly attractive for camping in the mountains. To the east is the Queyras Regional Nature Park, to the south is the Lac de Serre-Ponçon reservoir and to the west is the high-altitude town of Gap.
Those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers are in the right place in Châteauroux-les-Alpes: they can stroll through the charming village, where they can visit the Saint-Marcellin church and take in the idyllic scenery of the surrounding mountains. To relax, you can also go on hiking tours in the Écrins National Park, which boasts forests, waterfalls, lakes and mountain pastures. The southern part of the Western Alps attracts mountain bikers, mountaineers and climbers to the region. In winter, there are plenty of skiers and snowboarders here, and due to its proximity to Lac de Serre-Ponçon, the municipality of Châteauroux-les-Alpes also attracts many swimming fans. Sporty campers use the lake for kayaking, windsurfing or kitesurfing, stand-up paddling or boating.
From the south of Germany, travellers can reach Châteauroux-les-Alpes either via Switzerland or Austria. The former route is shorter at less than 550 km and is therefore recommended. Travellers cross Switzerland via Basel, Bern and Geneva, following the A1 for the most part. From France, they first take the A41 to Chambéry and then the A43. For around 35 kilometres, they drive through Italy before returning to France. The N94 national road, which runs alongside the Écrins National Park, brings you to Châteauroux-les-Alpes, where you should make at least one stop. Nature lovers can take a break at Lake Neuchâtel or Lake Geneva. Both bodies of water are close to the motorway and are ideal for a walk. Those interested in culture, for example, choose Chambéry for a stop. Here they can visit the Saint-François-de-Sales cathedral from the 15th and 16th centuries or the Ducs de Savoie castle. Art enthusiasts should not miss the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
When camping in Châteauroux-les-Alpes, some families visit the water park in Embrun or the riding centre near Gap. The Écrins National Park offers plenty of activities, including the Forest Sensations climbing park and the Serre-Ponçon animal park.
Lake Embrun - Plan d'eau d'Embrun - is separated from the large Lac de Serre-Ponçon by a promenade. Guests appreciate the shady beaches here for swimming trips. Campers can hire pedalos and rowing boats or go kayaking and sailing here. There are also tennis courts and a round or two on the Du Plan d'Eau mini-golf course, but the real highlight is the water playground with inflatable stations, which is located on Lake Embrun near the shore. Every summer, air-cushioned climbing walls, catapults and trampolines await holidaymakers, guaranteeing fun and games for young and old alike.
La Batie Neuve riding centre is located between Gap and Lac de Serre-Ponçon. Riding lessons are on the programme here, or you can explore the vast forests and fields on horseback. The ponies and goats on site are much loved by the children.
At one of the campsites in Châteauroux-les-Alpes, guests can look forward to regional delicacies. In contrast to the Côte d'Azur, where light meals are on the menu, heartier dishes are often served in the hinterland. For example, rissoles dumplings or daube provencale - a goulash with strong red wine and olives - are a speciality of the region. A typical dish from the south of France must be accompanied by a suitable white, rosé or red wine from the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. A traditional dessert also rounds off the unique flavour experience. Champsaur cake with sweet jam, candied fruit and crème brûlée are just some of the many delicacies here
