Special features of camping in Fontvieille

The quiet campsites in Fontvieille in the south of France are in a very natural setting. The municipality is located on the Rhône at the edge of the Alpilles mountain range and just 8 kilometres from the capital of the Arondissement, Arles. It is part of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park and is surrounded by pine forests, which provide shade for camping and invite you to doze off and relax. Active holidaymakers will also find a wide range of activities on site, such as tennis, horse riding and paintball. There are also plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling in the surrounding forests. Thanks to their favourable location, the campsites in Fontvieille are also an excellent starting point for day trips to one of the nearby towns or to the sea.

How to get there

The campsites on the Côte d'Azur are just under 700 kilometres from Freiburg im Breisgau. The easiest and quickest way to get there is via the A36, A39, A40, A42 and A7 motorways, some of which are subject to tolls. However, if you want to see more of the country, it is advisable to take the main roads. The route via the N5, D146 and D33 is particularly attractive, as it leads directly through the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura, where you can admire unspoilt French nature. About halfway along the route is the city of Lyon, which is ideal for a short stopover. To start your camping holiday and get a first impression of the French way of life, it is worth visiting the medieval old town with its so-called traboules - secret passageways that lead from the street through corridors, stairwells and backyards. In addition, numerous historic buildings such as the Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica, which towers high above the city, or the Gothic Saint-Jean Cathedral are waiting to be discovered.

Activities and excursions

Holidaymakers interested in culture can discover a number of sights in the region, such as legendary castles and monasteries. The surrounding area also has plenty to offer foodies.

Picturesque view from the watchtower

Founded as a Benedictine monastery, Montmajour Abbey is an important sight in Provence and is listed as a national monument. On a trip to Montmajour, you will be impressed by the accessible crypt, beautifully preserved capitals and four galleries that house the burial niches and tombstones of the Counts of Provence. There is also a watchtower that offers a picturesque view of the surrounding countryside.

Gourmet food from the market

If you want to stock up on the best food while camping, you can visit one of the many markets in the region. As is usual in France, each village has its own small market. This means you can head to a different marketplace every day, where you can buy fruit and vegetables, fresh seafood and meat products and even clothes and furniture. For example, the farmers' market in Fontvieille takes place every Monday, where you can buy local specialities directly from the producer. You get the French way of life for free.

Gastronomy

The best ingredients for flavourful food and wine ripen under the French sun. There are always new excuses to take a trip to savour a variety of delicacies: candied fruit in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, flatbread in Maillane, Camargue crayfish in Arles or liqueur in Châteaurenard. The Salon du Vin et des Gourmets wine and gourmet fair is also held in September, and as there is a large olive-growing area nearby, tapenade, a cream made from olives, capers and anchovies mixed with olive oil and pepper, is often served with food. People also like to eat pieds-paquets - stuffed lamb tripe in a tomato and wine sauce - or brouillade de truffes - an omelette-like dish made from eggs, butter and crème fraîche and garnished with grated truffles.

Best time to visit

The climate around the Mediterranean is predominantly Mediterranean and temperatures in Fontvieille remain above freezing all year round. Summers are warm to hot and spoil you with up to 12 hours of sunshine per day, while winters are mild and sunny and still offer around five hours of sunshine a day. Short and stormy rain showers are possible all year round, but mainly occur in the winter months. The best time to go camping in Fontvieille is between May and September, when temperatures remain constant at around 26 degrees Celsius during the day and the thermometer stays above a pleasant 15 degrees at night.
