With its fine sandy beaches and small hidden bays, the former fishing village of Le Lavandou in Provence is the perfect destination for a camping holiday in the south of France. Dreamlike nature, pretty little towns and a mild Mediterranean climate: camping in Le Lavandou is camping in one of the most beautiful places on the Côte D'Azur.
Le Lavandou has a whole range of recommended campsites. Many of them are typically Mediterranean in style and have eucalyptus trees, pine forests and palm trees on the grounds. The sites are also often located by the sea and some offer direct access to the beach.
This beautiful terraced campsite is located on a gently sloping site in the immediate vicinity of a sandy beach. The enchanting bay of Cavaliere is just a few minutes' walk away and the surrounding area is ideal for hiking and cycling. The price-performance ratio is extremely good for the Côte D'Azur.
Small but nice 2-star campsite on a densely wooded hill with a view to the south and the sea. The nearest beach is around 1.5 kilometres from the site and Le Lavandou is 10 minutes away by car. The perfect site for campers looking for peace and quiet and want to relax in beautiful surroundings.
Beautiful, quiet campsite for those who appreciate the simple life when camping. There is no luxury here, but there are great surroundings, friendly owners and plenty of space to relax and switch off. There is electricity, hot water and a restaurant on site.
Medium-sized 3-star campsite with 175 pitches and a wide range of leisure and entertainment facilities. The coast of the Côte D'Azur is about 700 metres from the site, and diving courses are offered on site.
Shady 5-star campsite on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean with direct access to the sea on two stretches of beach. Camp Du Domaine is one of the most popular campsites on the Côte D'Azur. It is therefore advisable to book early, especially if you want one of the fantastic pitches right by the sea.
Pets are allowed on many campsites in Le Lavandou. However, you should find out in advance whether there are any special rules, for example if campers are staying in a mobile home or rental accommodation and not in their own motorhome.
Dogs must generally be kept on a lead on the campsites. Some campsites with a beach also have separate beach areas for dog owners, although dogs usually have to be kept on a lead here too. Dogs are generally not permitted on the public beaches in and around Le Lavandou.
Le Lavandou is also known as the "town of dolphins and whales" due to its distinctive coat of arms and is located between Toulon and Saint-Tropez in the Var department in the south of the Côte D'Azur. The former fishing village stretches along 12 kilometres of coastline and is known above all for its 12 beaches, where you can relax in summer.
In the neighbourhood of Le Lavandou, the somewhat larger municipality of Bormes-les-Mimosas is situated in an idyllic location at the foot of the Massif des Maures. The mountain range is densely wooded with chestnut forests and cork oaks and is a great destination for a day trip. There are also numerous national parks in the hinterland, which are ideal for hiking and cycling.
The beautiful Plaine des Maures National Park with the picturesque Lac des Escarcets is easily accessible from Le Lavandou. If you want to see the typical Provençal pine trees in one of the last untouched wilderness areas of the Côte D'Azur away from the tourist crowds while hiking or mountain biking, this is the place for you. The extensive Verdon National Park is a little better known, but no less worth seeing. In the famous Verdon Gorge, the turquoise-coloured River Verdon has carved its way up to 700 metres into the limestone of the Prealps. An excursion to the "Grand Canyon of France" is a must for every visitor to Provence.
There are many pretty little towns along the coast, each with its own charm. The coastal road "Corniche des Maures" runs along numerous bends between Saint-Tropez and Le Lavandou and offers marvellous views of lavender fields, the mountains and the sea. Seaside resorts such as Cavalière, Le Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer or Cavalaire-sur-Mer invite you to linger or stroll through the Provençal markets.
Directly opposite Le Lavandou is the archipelago of the Hyeric Islands (French: Îles d'Hyères), also known as the "Golden Islands". The archipelago with the islands of Port-Cros, Le Levant and Porquerolles is a nature reserve and is one of the most charming corners of the Côte d'Azur. The islands are ideal for diving, while Levant is particularly popular with naturists. The archipelago can be reached by ferry from the mainland.
The campsites in Le Lavandou offer a wide range of leisure and entertainment activities, especially in the high season in summer. Water sports enthusiasts in particular get their money's worth in the mild temperatures of the French Riviera. The charming hinterland is also ideal for hiking and cycling tours. And if you want, you can also simply relax on the beach.
The Iles d'Or (Golden Islands) of Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Levant are among the lesser-known island beauties in the Mediterranean. Port-Cros in particular is a true natural paradise - even underwater. On a diving trip, you can explore the fascinating underwater world of the archipelago with a snorkel or diving goggles.
The coastal landscapes of the Var are best explored on foot. Two beautiful hiking trails in the region are the "Chemin des Dattes" (Date Trail) and the "Balade des Crêtes". On this ridge walk through the forests of the Massif des Maures, hikers can enjoy marvellous views over the bay of Cavalaire.
12 beaches stretch along the coast around Le Lavandou - and one is more beautiful than the other. The long strips of golden sand slope gently into the sea, making them perfect for families with children. However, dogs are not allowed on the beaches of Le Lavandou.
To enjoy plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures, we recommend a camping holiday in the months of May to September. Temperatures are constantly above 20° degrees during this time, and in July and August they even climb up to 30° degrees.
If you want to enjoy the beach and sea on your camping holiday in Le Lavandou, you should come in June, July and August. However, this is also the high season on the Côte D'Azur. The campsites fill up quickly, so you should book early. Prices can also be somewhat higher in some cases.
The low season from mid-October to the end of March is a little cooler. This time is still suitable for active campers who want to explore the area on foot or by bike, especially as most other tourists are already back home by then. In January and February, however, the weather is quite uncomfortable.
