The French municipality of Orgon is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is located to the north of Marseille, directly in the Alpilles Regional Nature Park. Orgon borders the river Durance to the north-east and the Alpilles mountain range extends to the west. The Étang de Berre bay lies around 35 kilometres south of the country town, and the Côte d'Azur is around 45 kilometres away.
Those interested in culture will certainly get their money's worth in Orgon and the surrounding area. For example, the medieval town of Miramas or the harbour town of Martigues on the Étang de Berre, which is also known as Little Venice due to its canals. The municipality itself attracts visitors with a local history museum and sights such as the Notre-Dame de Beauregard chapel. Thanks to the Alpilles mountain range in the Alpilles Regional Nature Park, many mountaineers and mountain bikers are drawn to the region. A diverse flora and vast, dense forests enrich the landscape. Camping in Orgon is not just for those seeking peace and quiet, but also for animal lovers, thanks to lesser kestrels, Egyptian vultures and Bonelli's eagles. The Durance offers the perfect environment for anglers and canoeists in particular.
If holidaymakers come from the south of Germany, for example from Munich, they can be in Orgon in less than 1,000 km. The shortest route is via Memmingen, Bregenz, Bern and Valence. Campers drive westwards on the A96 motorway. This motorway becomes the A14 in Austria. After Bregenz, travellers enter Switzerland and then take the A1 via Zurich and Geneva. From France, they first take the A41 and then the A43, A48 and A49. The final route is the A7 via Avignon. Holidaymakers from the north of Germany, such as Berlin, can reach Orgon in just under 1,500 km. The best route is via Nuremberg, Lyon and finally Valence. In this case, campers follow the A9 motorway and from Nuremberg the A6. At Sinsheim, follow the A5, from where you continue across the French border on the A36. The A36 is replaced by the A6 and this in turn by the A7. On this route, we recommend stopping off in Montbéliard, for example to stretch your legs in the Mont Bart fortress.
Bathing fans can go on day trips to the Étang de Berre lake and the sea, while those interested in culture can stroll through Miramas or Marseille. Those seeking peace and quiet can go horse riding, hiking or cycling through the Alpilles Regional Nature Park.
Marseille impresses with its historic old town and its location directly on the Mediterranean. The Vieux Port - the old harbour - is at the top of the agenda for visitors. Here, travellers stroll past a wide variety of yachts and sailing ships and linger in one of the numerous bars, cafés and restaurants. A real highlight is the pilgrimage church of Notre-Dame de la Garde, which offers a sweeping view over the city and the sea thanks to its 150-metre-high elevation. Romantic travellers can stroll to the many secluded bays in the Calanques National Park, most of which are only accessible on foot.
For an exciting excursion on the doorstep, campers can explore the Alpilles Regional Nature Park. Vines and olive trees dot the region's forests, fields, marshes and white limestone cliffs. The charming village of Maussane-les-Alpilles, known for its olive oil production and non-violent bullfights, is located in the centre of the landscape.
Many travellers enjoy a traditional breakfast at one of the campsites in Orgon or the surrounding area. A croissant or a yeast roll, known as a brioche, is often enjoyed with a coffee with milk, cocoa or tea. But campers also appreciate and love a classic baguette topped with tasty French cheese. For lunch, tender poultry and a colourful ratatouille with fresh herbs from the region are served. How about a light dish in the evening? Bouillabaisse fish soup from Marseille or oysters with a hint of lemon juice are definitely a treat for the palate. The cuisine of Provence serves up a variety of main courses as well as delicious desserts. Varied pastries, candied fruit and crème brûlée create unique flavour experiences.
In summer, holidaymakers can expect warm weather and plenty of sunshine when camping in Orgon. July and August are the hottest months with temperatures of around 27 degrees Celsius. During this time, the water temperature in the Mediterranean is around 22 degrees Celsius. The coldest months in Orgon are December, January and February. However, winters are extremely mild, averaging 11 degrees Celsius, while in spring and autumn the thermometer ranges between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. Mountaineers, mountain bikers, runners and hikers feel particularly at home in this temperate climate. These conditions make the region attractive for travellers all year round.
