Big city flair, banks, skyscrapers: that's what most people associate with Frankfurt am Main. But the Hessian metropolis on the Main is also a great destination for a relaxed camping holiday. Idyllic natural landscapes stretch out in the green belt beyond the city limits. The nearby Taunus is a wonderful area for active holidaymakers and those seeking relaxation in one of the numerous spas. And if you fancy a bit of culture, you will find plenty of opportunities in Frankfurt city centre.
Frankfurt may not be the state capital, but it is the largest and most important city in Hesse. Thanks to its striking skyline, the metropolis on the Main is also affectionately known as "Mainhattan" and is a popular destination for city breaks and short trips. But Frankfurt also has a lot to offer campers, with an extensive green belt of meadows and forests surrounding the city centre, where the urban jungle is quickly forgotten. To the north-west of Frankfurt is the Taunus - one of the most beautiful low mountain ranges in Germany, which is particularly enchanting for nature lovers. The Rheingau, probably Germany's most famous wine-growing region, also begins not far from the city. The campsites in Frankfurt are mostly located in the countryside outside the city centre. Thanks to good connections to the city centre, you can easily leave your own vehicle at the campsite when you go out into the city. Dogs are allowed on many campsites. There are usually playgrounds and other leisure activities for children.
The facilities at the campsites in Frankfurt leave nothing to be desired. In addition to pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents, some also offer rental accommodation and mobile homes. It is advisable to book well in advance during the peak summer season.
You couldn't be closer to Frankfurt city centre: City Camp Frankfurt in the Heddernheim district is located directly on the River Nidda and is just a stone's throw from the city centre. The spacious park-like area offers pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents, clean sanitary facilities and a waste disposal station for motorhomes. There are numerous shops and restaurants around the site, as well as an underground station that takes you to the city centre in just under 15 minutes.
The Mainkur campsite offers a great location right on the banks of the River Main and a priceless view of the Frankfurt skyline. The holiday resort is only around 9 km from the city centre and is ideal for combining a stay in the countryside with a city trip. There is a large playground for younger guests. Food and drinks are available from the site's own kiosk. The site is located directly on the Main cycle path, which makes it easy to reach the city centre.
This popular campsite is located near the idyllic village of Mörfelden-Walldorf in a picturesque landscape of forests and meadows. There are several forest lakes near the campsite, which are ideal for swimming in summer. There is also a large children's playground on the site. In addition to a waste disposal station for motorhomes, comfort pitches with their own electricity and water connections are also available. Frankfurt is easily accessible thanks to its proximity to the A5 motorway exit.
There is a lot to discover in the Rhine-Main region besides Frankfurt. Wiesbaden, the state capital of Hesse, is a great excursion destination, for example. The second largest city in Hesse is one of the oldest spas in Europe and is known for its many hot springs, beautiful city centre and stunning parks. Another highlight is Rüdesheim am Rhein. The small town with its quaint old town and the world-famous Drosselgasse is one of the wine-growing centres of the Rheingau and is definitely worth a visit. The sophisticated spa town of Bad Homburg just outside Frankfurt is also well worth a visit. The town's spa gardens are among the most beautiful parks in Germany.
With its magnificent boulevards, elegant buildings and pretty old town, Wiesbaden is one of the most beautiful cities in the region. The former residence of the Dukes of Nassau became a world spa town in the 19th century and is still a hot tip for wellness holidaymakers today thanks to its numerous hot springs. The Greek chapel on the Neroberg, the magnificent Kurhaus and Biebrich Palace on the Rhine are also well worth a visit. The Rheingau and Taunus regions in the surrounding area offer numerous other excursion destinations.
Rüdesheim is one of the best-known and most beautiful places in the Rheingau and is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Germany. Situated on the slopes of the Taunus mountains, the winegrowing town on the Rhine is located directly at the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Middle Rhine Valley and offers Rhine romance at its finest. The main attraction is undoubtedly the world-famous Drosselgasse, where one wine tavern follows the next and the party lasts from dawn to dusk. A trip on the cable car to the imposing Niederwalddenkmal is also popular - from here you can enjoy fantastic views over vineyards and the picturesque landscape of the Rheingau.
Just a few kilometres from the gates of Frankfurt lies the sophisticated spa town of Bad Homburg. Bad Homburg used to be a favourite place to stay for Prussian kings. Today, the town is a popular spa town that enchants visitors with its mixture of elegant 19th century buildings and spacious parks. Worth seeing are the historic old town with its pretty half-timbered houses, the 17th century castle and the magnificent Church of the Saviour. However, the highlight is undoubtedly the spa gardens, which are among the most beautiful landscaped parks in Germany.
Palmengarten Frankfurt: Frankfurt's Palmengarten is one of the largest botanical gardens in Germany. Highlights include the venerable palm house from the 19th century and the tropicarium with its exotic plants. The narrow-gauge railway "Palmenexpress", which runs through the entire park, is popular with children. Frankfurt Zoo: Frankfurt Zoo is a wonderful excursion destination for the whole family. Unique in Germany is the Grzimek House, named after the animal researcher and former zoo director, where nocturnal animals can be observed. Römer and Frankfurt's Old Town: The Römer is Frankfurt's town hall and one of the city's landmarks with its 15th century stepped gable façade. Between the Römer and the cathedral is Frankfurt's newly reconstructed old town, which is probably the youngest old town in Germany. Städel Museum: A true paradise for art lovers: the renowned Städel offers an overview of 700 years of European cultural history with works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Picasso and many other masters. Titus-Thermen: A real recommendation for families when the weather doesn't play ball. The Titus thermal baths combine an adventure pool, sauna area and wellness centre with Roman flair. The adventure pool with waterfall and 50 metre long slide is particularly popular with kids.
Frankfurt doesn't have to be the end of your camping holiday. If you still have a little time to spare, follow in the footsteps of the Brothers Grimm and follow the German Fairy Tale Route. This fantastic themed route is inspired by the fairy tales and legends of the Brothers Grimm and takes you around 600 kilometres to the locations and places of the famous fairy tales. The tour starts in Hanau and ends in Bremen and is perfect for motorhome travellers in particular: There are great pitches for motorhomes everywhere. If you don't have quite so much time, you can of course also explore just individual stages of this truly magical route. It's definitely worth it!
