Fresh North Sea air, kilometres of sandy beaches and the Wadden Sea right on your doorstep: camping in Cuxhaven is the perfect way to enjoy the German North Sea coast with all your senses. The diverse seaside resort offers marvellous campsites by the Wadden Sea and the Elbe. Active holidaymakers in particular get their money's worth on long walks, hikes and cycle tours. Afterwards, the thalassotherapy centre invites you to relax and unwind. Dog owners will also enjoy the large dog beach.

Special features of camping in Cuxhaven

The seaside resort of Cuxhaven is located at the northern tip of Lower Saxony and, in addition to the town centre, consists of the resorts of Döse, Duhnen and Sahlenburg as well as 16 smaller villages. Many campsites are located directly by the sea, so it is never far to the nearest beach. Especially in summer, the seaside resort is therefore a popular destination for a relaxed family holiday with sun, sea and beach life. The campsites in Cuxhaven offer a good mix of comfort and nature and are aimed at both families and active holidaymakers. There are recommended campsites in the lively Duhnen district, for example. There are plenty of souvenir shops waiting for visitors here. The numerous restaurants and cafés have a tempting aroma of baked goods and fried fish. Directly on the dyke, the heated Steinmarne outdoor seawater pool invites you to splash around and relax on the sunbathing lawn. The Sahlenburg campsites, also mostly in a good beach location, blend into the wooded and heathery landscape of Sahlenburg, where the spicy scent of the forest is combined with a salty North Sea breeze. The outdoor swimming pool in the Wernerwald forest is also in the immediate vicinity. In addition to a heated seawater pool with slides, the swimming pool also has a paddling pool and a shady sunbathing lawn. Dog owners don't have to leave their faithful companion at home during their camping holiday in Cuxhaven. Many of the campsites allow dogs. If you want to go to the beach with your dog, there are several beach areas for dogs on leads in Altenbruch at the lido and in Grimmershörn. There is also a dog beach at the Kugelbake, which is open in the main season. All other beaches are closed to dogs in the high season. Dogs must be kept on a lead when walking in the dunes, on the dyke or in the mudflats.

Popular campsites in Cuxhaven

In addition to pitches for motorhomes, some of the campsites in Cuxhaven also offer rental accommodation, mobile homes and bungalows. The average price is affordable in most cases, even in summer. For campers travelling by motorhome, there are also some motorhome pitches in the pilot quarter at the harbour near the tranquil village of Lüdingworth.

Wattenlöper campsite

The popular Wattenlöper campsite is just a few steps away from the beautiful sandy beach of Duhnen. The centre of Duhnen is just a few minutes' walk away. The spa centre and the ahoi! adventure pool are also not far away. The spacious premium pitches are particularly popular, and there is an apartment building with attractive holiday flats for 2-4 people directly adjacent to the site.

Camping site Muschelgrund

The fantastic Muschelgrund campsite is located directly on Sahlenburg beach and is surrounded by beautiful woodland and heathland. The North Sea is just 100 metres away. The heathland stretches out to the north, inviting you to take long walks and cycle tours. Bicycle hire is available directly on site. Dogs are welcome on the site. Campingplatz Beckmann-Duhnen This campsite is located on the outskirts of Duhnen and is ideal for exploring the town centre of the spa town as well as the beaches and the Wadden Sea. The pitches on the grassy site are separated by hedges and offer plenty of privacy. There is a separate area for dog owners. Thanks to the wide range of sports facilities, children's playground and handcart hire, the site is very popular with families.

Favourite places in the region

In addition to a relaxing stay by the sea, a camping holiday in Cuxhaven also offers the opportunity for discovery tours and excursions in the beautiful surroundings. The heath village of Berensch-Arensch, for example, is a popular destination in the vicinity of Cuxhaven. The spa town of Altenwalde, on the other hand, offers plenty of peace and quiet. And if you want to go on a mudflat hike, you should definitely visit the island of Neuwerk.

Berensch-Arensch

Just south of Cuxhaven lies the picturesque heath village of Berensch-Arensch directly on the Wadden Sea. The popular holiday resort is a wonderful excursion destination and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Cuxhaven coastal heath. The extensive landscape conservation area is criss-crossed by extensive moorland and marshland forests and is a dream come true, especially for nature-loving campers and hikers.

Altenwalde

Visitors to the tranquil spa town of Altenwalde will find a rural idyll and plenty of peace and quiet. The surrounding area is perfect for hiking and cycling through the green forests and fields. On an excursion, you should also take a look at the neighbouring districts of Gudendorf and Franzenburg and visit the Altenwalde Kreuzkirche church. Tennis fans will also find a new clay court facility here.

Neuwerk

The small green island of Neuwerk is located directly off the coast of Cuxhaven, but actually belongs to Hamburg. The island is visited daily by boat. A more romantic and exciting way to reach the island is to take a trip on a horse-drawn wagon or on foot through the Wadden Sea. The best option is a guided mudflat hike to Neuwerk. The tours start in Sahlenburg and Duhnen.

Sights and excursion destinations

  • Ritzebüttel Castle: The 600-year-old Ritzebüttel Castle is the cultural centre of Cuxhaven and should not be missed on any visit to the town. On a walk through the castle gardens, visitors can discover sculptures and works of art hidden among the trees.
  • Cuxhaven's Kugelbake (spherical beacon): The sea mark on the northernmost headland is one of the most famous sights in Cuxhaven. In the past, the beacon served as a landmark for ships on the busy shipping route.
  • Cuxhavener Küstenheide: The Cuxhavener Küstenheide is the largest contiguous heathland area on the North Sea and a wonderful excursion destination for nature lovers. The area stretches from Cuxhaven-Duhnen, Holte-Spangen via Berensch-Arensch to Oxstedt and offers many cycling and hiking trails.
  • Alte Liebe: Cuxhaven's Alte Liebe is a historic jetty in the harbour area. One of the many anecdotes about its name is that the jetty is named after three ships that sank in 1733, one of which was called "Alte Liebe".
  • Museum Windstärke 10: The Museum Windstärke 10 has found a home in two extended fish packing halls in the middle of the harbour's fishing area. In the museum, visitors can marvel at fascinating exhibits salvaged from the sea and learn lots of interesting facts about the history of deep-sea fishing.

Tour tip

Cuxhaven is ideal for walks along the beach and excursions into the Wadden Sea. A beautiful tour starts in Duhnen and leads along the long beach promenade along the guarded beach with its colourful beach chairs. The beach continues to Döse to the tip of the Kugelbake, where the best waves can be found. The Grimmershörner Bucht opens up around the headland with excellent water sports conditions and a pretty green beach. The dyke, overgrown with grass and wild flowers, separates Duhner Strand from the town centre and runs parallel to the promenade to the shallow beach of Döse.
