Heringsdorf is the first choice for many holidaymakers who come to Usedom for camping. The famous imperial resort in the north-east of the island is one of the most fashionable holiday destinations in the region. Stylish spa architecture from the turn of the century, white sandy beaches and the famous pier are a magical attraction for holidaymakers. Just a few steps from the water, camping holidaymakers will find their paradise at the campsite in Heringsdorf, whether in a tent, caravan or motorhome.
The seaside resort of Heringsdorf has been attracting travellers from all over Germany for more than 100 years. Even back then, visitors appreciated the fresh sea air, the white beaches and the peaceful ambience. Travellers enjoyed the stunning sunsets over the Baltic Sea in a beach chair with a glass of wine or a delicious fish sandwich. To this day, holidaymakers love this dreamlike panorama on Heringsdorf's beach promenade.
Usedom can be enjoyed to the full here, for example during various activities such as a sailing trip or first attempts at surfing. In the hinterland, the lakes and coastal forests are perfect for a bike ride. Many travellers also get on horseback and explore the landscapes of northern Germany on a ride. Such leisure activities can often be booked directly at the campsite in Heringsdorf.
Heringsdorf's flagship attraction is the pier: At 508 metres, it is the longest of its kind in Germany. The long building with various shops and restaurants is located directly on the pier.
For families, we recommend a visit to the Naturerlebniswelt Heringsdorf: on an exhibition area of around 1,500 m², guests can travel through more than 500 million years of natural history. There are various fossils and rock formations to see.
The aquariums and terrariums are among the highlights of the museum. The famous naval harbour of Peenemünde is just under 35 km away. There, travellers can visit the Peenemünde Submarine Museum, an exciting exhibition on the military past of the island of Usedom. Here, holidaymakers can explore the U-461, a 4,000-tonne ship, and learn more about the submarine's technology.
Interactive experiment stations await holidaymakers at the Phänomenta Peenemünde science museum. Children can learn more about how the world works at 300 exhibition points.
Many holidaymakers who come to Heringsdorf for camping use the bike hire service to get around the island flexibly. The other imperial spas and Peenemünde harbour can be explored by bike. You can also quickly reach the Bodden landscape in the south. Alternatively, railway fans can change to the Kaiserbäder-Express.
Relaxation is the order of the day on Heringsdorf beach, where sun loungers and beach chairs await visitors. It is also worth taking a look at the Heringsdorf thermal spa, where wellness is a top priority. Thalasso and soothing massages, mineral baths, packs and warming saunas ensure pure relaxation. There is also a whole range of children's pools for younger guests. In some cases, even the campsites themselves offer wellness.
The Baltic herring has an international reputation. Especially on a crispy baked roll and topped with tomatoes, gherkins and onions, it tastes particularly good to locals and visitors alike. Matjes rolls are available at many stalls along the coastal promenade. The speciality is also often served as rollmops or in oil.
Fish lovers can also order eel in dill sauce on the spot. This delicacy is rarely missing from a menu in Heringsdorf. Potatoes and turnip puree are served as a side dish.
The spicy recipe for the Russian-inspired solyanka dates back to the GDR era. Prepared with ham, sausage and letcho, the soup is a fortifying and warming snack on cooler days. The dish is particularly popular in autumn and winter. In late summer, game dishes with regional berries are one of the culinary highlights.
The weather in Heringsdorf is particularly suitable for a beach holiday between June and September. Especially in the height of summer, the air temperature can reach over 20°C - the Baltic Sea is up to 19°C warm and tempts you to go for a long swim. In May and June as well as in September and October, the winds are ideal for taking to the water on a surfboard or sailing boat.
Many travellers also come to Usedom to go kitesurfing during this time. In winter, camping in Heringsdorf is only possible to a limited extent. Many of the campsites close their gates or are only open for motorhomes.
