Just a few kilometres to the west is the cultural stronghold of Münster, which is also one of the most bike-friendly cities in Germany - the perfect destination for a day trip by bike. A little further north is the "city of peace" Osnabrück. This is where the Peace of Westphalia was signed in 1648. Today, the city attracts visitors with a varied cultural programme and a pretty city centre. Warendorf is also a real highlight not far from Sassenberg. The district town is known as the horse metropolis of Germany, as no other place in the country keeps so many horses.
Münster is the cycling capital of Germany. Nowhere else is there such a well-developed network of cycle paths, making Münster an ideal destination for cycle tours. There is plenty to see in the city: the city centre with its beautiful arcades on Prinzipalmarkt, imposing churches such as St. Lamberti and the mighty St. Paul's Cathedral, magnificent baroque buildings such as Münster Palace or the Erbdrostenhof. For culture fans, a visit to the Pablo Picasso Graphic Museum is also worthwhile.
Situated between the Teutoburg Forest and Wiehengebirge mountains, Osnabrück is the only major city in Germany that is located in the centre of a nature park. This makes the city an ideal starting point for exploring the beautiful landscapes of the Osnabrück region. The lovingly renovated historic old town and Osnabrück's numerous weekly markets invite you to take a leisurely stroll through the city.
Warendorf is known as the horse metropolis of the republic for its annual stallion parades. There are more horses in the pastures around Warendorf than anywhere else in Germany. Tour tipIf you have a little more time to explore the region, you should make a note of the following camping route: from Duisburg to Emmerich. This fantastic tour takes you along the Lower Rhine to the Dutch border. Along the way are picturesque towns such as Rheinberg, Xanten and Kalkar, great nature and plenty of opportunities to relax by the water. This tour is highly recommended, especially in summer. Cyclists in particular will get their money's worth on the route, as there are plenty of opportunities for day trips.find out more
