In many places in Greece, time seems to have stood still. This is one of the reasons why a camping holiday on the Greek mainland or one of the enchanting islands is so popular. Family-friendly sandy beaches with crystal-clear water alternate with rugged cliffs. There is also the flair of days gone by: excavations from ancient times and the remains of old temples provide an insight into times long past.

Camping in Greece has much more to offer than most travellers expect at first glance. Many of the campsites are beautifully situated by the sea with their own stretches of beach and the motorhome pitches offer a magnificent view of the azure waters of the Mediterranean. Compared to other European countries, the pitches in Greece are still quite cheap and the climatic conditions are ideal for a beach holiday right into autumn. In combination with the country's cultural wealth, camping in Greece is an unforgettably beautiful experience.
Ionian Islands: In the middle of the Ionian Sea on the west coast of Greece lie the islands of the same name, which include Corfu. The charming mix of beautiful beaches, sleepy little villages, a rich cultural landscape and extremely tasty cuisine is also sure to delight campers. Highlights of the fascinating island world are the mystical sea caves, some of which can be explored on boat tours. Peace and relaxation are guaranteed on the campsites of the Ionian Islands, as they are idyllically situated and are still considered insider tips.
Peloponnese: The peninsula is a true paradise for culture lovers. If you want to follow in the footsteps of ancient Greece, you should spend your camping holiday here. Mycenae and Corinth in the east, Sparta in the south, Olympia in the west and Patras in the north are incomparable testimonies to an advanced civilisation that shaped Europe for centuries. There are a number of wonderful campsites here that combine culture and relaxation by the sea in a marvellous way.
Thessaly: The region of Thessaly is a true natural paradise that exerts a great attraction on its visitors. Mountains, deep gorges, marvellous beaches, a beautiful coastal landscape and numerous inland lakes alternate. Either starting from a campsite or as a tour through Thessaly, the region is highly recommended for campers. Hikes and cycle tours ensure a varied holiday. The famous Meteora monasteries are a spectacular cultural monument that is a must-see on any holiday programme.
Epirus: The region of Epirus is still considered a real insider tip within Greece. Idyllic, often hidden beaches, framed by an impressive mountain landscape, invite you to linger. The unspoilt natural landscape in many places gives an idea of the original Greece, which has not yet been shaped by tourism. In combination with the culture and cuisine, campers can enjoy a very natural and relaxing holiday away from the mainstream. We recommend a trip to the island of Lefkas, which is connected to the mainland of Epirus by a bridge.
Corfu: The island is one of the best known and most popular in Greece. The cultural richness of Corfu is unrivalled and should be one of the reasons to choose this island. You can arrive by ferry or by plane and hire a motorhome. Afterwards, visitors to the island can look forward to Mediterranean forests and more than four million olive trees, which give Corfu a character all of its own. The impressive mountain scenery and the mysterious sandy and pebble bays with crystal-clear water for swimming are unique.
Crete: The island is often referred to as the "Pearl of the Mediterranean" and has the most hours of sunshine in Greece. These are not the worst conditions for a camping holiday, which is best enjoyed on a round trip around Crete. Hiking tours, climbing, cycling and, above all, swimming and sunbathing on the marvellous beaches are decisive arguments in favour of this island. Those interested in culture will be delighted by the ancient archaeological sites and palaces that give an idea of the splendour that was once at home here. And don't miss the delicious Mediterranean cuisine of Crete, which is world-famous.
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace: This region is well developed for tourism and in many places charming towns attract visitors with their typical mix of cultural highlights, historical artefacts, shopping opportunities, excellent restaurants and views of the sea. The city of Kavala with its harbour, the famous aqueduct and lots of life is a good example of this. Excursions into nature are also worthwhile, some of which are very different from the rest of the country.
Even in the high season, the price of pitches in Greece is manageable. As a rule, most campsites charge between 5 and 15 euros, depending on the facilities. Added to this are the costs for each person, with adults having to reckon with 5 to 8 euros. Children can be charged half price, and small children can often stay overnight for free or for a small fee. This means that the total price for a family is between 20 and 35 euros per night. More and more campers are interested in rental accommodation on campsites, which are available from as little as 25 euros per night. The more comfortable the facilities and the better the location, the higher the price. The electricity supply is often exclusive - campers in Greece have to calculate with additional costs. The electricity price is often offered as a daily flat rate of 2 to 5 euros. For a stay of one week, a family should expect to pay 170 to 280 euros for a pitch with electricity.
In Greece, the sanitary facilities can vary greatly in terms of their equipment and condition. On the larger sites, they are very modern and in very good condition. On small, very natural campsites, on the other hand, there are very few shower cubicles and less comfort. If you attach great importance to the sanitary facilities, you should enquire in advance on PiNCAMP or alternatively read the reviews of other campers, which provide excellent information. The ADAC ratings for the 10 most popular campsites in Greece, in which the sanitary facilities are scrutinised among other things, are between 3.8 and 4.8 stars. This is evidence of a high standard.
Like almost everywhere in Europe, July is usually the sunniest and warmest month of the year. Average summer temperatures range from 27 to 30 degrees Celsius, which is particularly favourable for beach lovers and sun worshippers. Greece's Mediterranean climate is characterised by the fact that even in spring and autumn it is comparatively warm at 18 to 22 degrees Celsius and camping is possible without restrictions. More and more winter visitors have also discovered the country for themselves, although there are very few campsites that open in winter due to low demand. In the summer months, rainfall is very low and with water temperatures of around 22 to 26 degrees, beach holidays are particularly popular.
The transport and traffic routes in Greece are well developed and in an acceptable condition. The more developed a region is for tourism (Thessaly, Rhodes, Crete, Peloponnese), the better the existing infrastructure. Away from the mainstream, campers should be aware that roads still need to be improved and therefore caution is advised. In terms of transport, Greece relies primarily on buses and ferries. In combination, even small villages can be reached. There are also good connections on the long-distance railway lines if campers are travelling in Greece without their own vehicle. A little knowledge of the region or language skills are necessary to reach your destination.
Greece is a destination with great potential for campers. Travelling via Italy is relatively easy, alternatively there are campervan hire companies on the islands and in the larger cities. The impressive natural landscape, the beautiful beaches and the cultural highlights make Greece an attractive destination for campers. Visitors can also rely on the excellent price-performance ratio and spend a holiday close to nature by the sea. The pitches, including ancillary costs, are still very favourable compared to the rest of Europe.
