From Clew Bay in the north to Galway Bay in the south, Connemara is a natural paradise in western Ireland. When camping in Connemara, active holidaymakers are drawn to Ireland's only fjord, Killary Harbour, with its well-developed network of hiking trails. A ride on the famous Connemara ponies through the rolling hills is also unforgettable. One of the highlights for culture lovers is a visit to the imposing Kylemore Abbey on the shores of the lake of the same name.

Special features of camping in Connemara

Many campsites in Connemara are located close to the Atlantic Ocean. In the far north, for example, you can book your holiday near the idyllic village of Gowlaun or the Renvyle peninsula. A shallow, family-friendly sandy beach awaits you here. You can also experience a dream holiday at the campsites in Connemara near Letterfrack, where the Connemara National Park Visitor Centre is located. The famous Kylemore Abbey is also within easy reach, and if you are staying at one of the campsites near the small town of Clifden, you are not far from numerous shopping opportunities. The town is known for its arts and crafts and the Connemara Pony Market, which takes place every year in August. Clifden is also close to the popular Twelve Bens hiking region with 12 impressive peaks.

Best time to visit

Thanks to the Atlantic influence, Connemara has a relatively mild climate all year round. In April, when many campsites open, temperatures of up to 12 degrees Celsius are already ideal for hiking and excursions. This holiday region is also characterised by frequent rainfall. Due to its location in the north of Europe, it doesn't get dark until late in the evening in Connemara during the summer months: it is light for up to 18 hours a day. In July and August, the average maximum temperatures reach their highest level at 20 degrees Celsius. The Atlantic remains refreshingly cool with a maximum of 15 degrees Celsius even in summer.
