with trusted ADAC classificationToscolano is located in the province of Brescia in Lombardy and lies on the western shore of Lake Garda. The municipality is characterised by its combination of mountains and lakes. An incomparable backdrop and the wide range of leisure activities on offer guarantee a camping holiday that will delight families, active holidaymakers and nature lovers alike. Surrounded by the mountains, Toscolano-Maderno - the two municipalities were merged in 1928 - not only invites you to camp by the lake, but also offers all kinds of activities for camping with dogs.
The campsite in Toscolano is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic centre of the municipality and lies within the walls of an old monastery dating back to the 14th century. It is an ideal starting point for visiting the historic buildings and churches. The resulting picturesque flair is underlined by the gardens that surround the campsite, which is ideal for a seaside holiday thanks to its proximity to the shore. However, active holidaymakers will also get their money's worth. Starting from Toscolano, tours into the Valle delle Cartiere or up the mountains Monte Pizzocolo and Monte Castello di Gaino can be easily organised. These promise a breathtaking panorama, regardless of whether you are travelling on foot or by mountain bike.
Travelling from Germany to Toscolano by motorhome or caravan is generally very straightforward, as the motorway network is well developed. From Munich, for example, the distance is only around 450 km and the route leads via Tyrol and the A22 Brenner motorway to Lake Garda. It is important to know that winter tyres are compulsory on winter roads in Austria during the winter months from 1 November to 15 April. Via Bolzano, Trento and Rovereto, take the Rovereto South exit to Torbole and you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of Lake Garda on the approach. Via Riva, you cycle along the west coast on a rather narrow road to Toscolano. This route covers around 416 km, and travelling by motorway makes for a manageable and shorter journey. If you have more time and leisure, we also recommend travelling via the old Brenner road, which has the advantage of allowing you to see some of the countryside and pass numerous northern Italian villages. What's more, some tolls, such as the Europe Bridge toll and the Brenner motorway toll, are waived on this route.
If you spend your holiday camping in Toscolano, there are plenty of activities and excursions on offer. These offers are of a cultural and sporting nature and therefore cover a wide range of interests.
Paragliding over Toscolano-Maderno and Lake Garda is a different kind of activity. During a tandem flight with a paraglider, sports enthusiasts are flooded with the pure feeling of freedom, coupled with the fascinating view over Lake Garda. A local provider with many years of experience organises the entire activity, from the journey to the jump to the safe landing.
A special attraction is the picturesque Valle delle Cartiere, the valley of the paper mills, which bears witness to Toscolano's past as the former paper centre of Europe. As early as the Middle Ages, numerous paper mills were established in this valley, which were fed by the water power of the Torrente Toscolano river. Today, you can visit them on a hike and learn more about the noble and famous paper with the ox's head as its trademark in the paper museum.
The dolce vita is very important in Toscolano. In addition to the well-known delicacies of Italian cuisine, such as pasta and pizza, fish specialities are a must in the Lake Garda region. But the guinea fowl breast is also a must-try. Lombardy also boasts a large selection of local wines, so every dish can be paired with a fine wine. Italy is known for its multi-course meals. The menu begins with an aperitif, followed by antipasti. After the first course, consisting of soup, risotto or pasta, the second course of fish or meat is served. The meal is rounded off with a sweet dessert and a coffee.
The climate on Lake Garda is influenced by the Alps in the upper part and the Po Valley in the lower part. These two aspects result in a sub-Mediterranean climate that promises little rainfall and above all warm summer months, making it ideal for camping in Toscolano. The region is characterised by two winds that enable surfing and kiteboarding in the north and provide a pleasant breeze on the beaches. The best time for a camping holiday on Lake Garda is from May to September, with maximum temperatures of up to 29 degrees Celsius in July and August. With an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, the lake is perfect for a refreshing dip.
