With its winding alleyways and picturesque canals, Venice is a dream destination for campers. However, the world-famous lagoon city on the Italian Adriatic coast has more to offer than just cultural treasures in abundance. There are numerous fantastic beaches along the coast, making Venice the ideal destination for a beach holiday. The impressive dune landscapes of the lagoon form the perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city and offer those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers an ideal spot for walks on the beach and hikes in the unspoilt hinterland.

Special features of camping in Venice

Thanks to its cultural treasures, the lagoon city of Venice at the northern end of the Italian Adriatic is at the top of many travellers' wish lists when visiting Italy. However, the majority of visitors are day trippers who only see a fraction of Venice. A camping holiday in Venice is the perfect opportunity to look behind the facades and explore the romantic old town with its magnificent palaces, bridges and winding alleyways without any time pressure - gondola ride through the canals included. As the historic centre of Venice is located on an island in the middle of the lagoon and there is an acute shortage of space, the campsites are located outside. The most popular sites are located to the east on the Cavallino-Treporti peninsula between the holiday resorts of Lido di Jesolo and Treporti. The holiday resorts are mostly located directly on the golden sandy beach that stretches along the entire peninsula and are perfectly suited to the needs of families and beach holidaymakers. The easiest way to get to the centre of Venice is by vaporetto: public water buses that depart from Punta Sabbioni south of Treporti, for example. The journey takes just under 30 minutes.

Popular campsites in Venice

The campsites around Venice are excellently equipped and generally offer an extensive leisure programme, bike and water sports equipment hire and children's entertainment in high season. In addition to pitches for motorhomes and caravans, mobile homes, bungalows and other rental accommodation are often available.

Union Lido Vacanze

Union Lido Vacanze is one of the best-known and most popular campsites near Venice. The ultra-modern camping town on the Cavallino-Treporti peninsula is located directly on a beautiful sandy beach and has a huge water park with several swimming pools. The site is embedded in a large nature park that invites you to take walks in the shade of the pine trees. Guests with dogs are very welcome and stay in a separate area.

Club Camping Jesolo International

The beautiful Club Camping Jesolo International campsite is located on the western edge of the holiday resort of Lido di Jesolo. The holiday resort is known for its huge range of leisure activities, which makes the campsite the first choice for families in particular. Thanks to its unique location between the sandy beach and the mouth of the Fiume Sile, the campsite is also very popular with water sports enthusiasts. A water park with a great pool area rounds off the offer.

Camping Miramare

The perfect campsite for anyone planning a city trip to Venice. Camping Miramare is not far from the water bus landing stage in Punta Sabbioni. If you don't want to make the short walk, you can even take the campsite's own shuttle bus. To the south is the enchanting golden sandy beach at the Punta Sabbioni lighthouse. It also has its own dog beach. Pets are welcome on the campsite.

Camping Fusina Venezia

Camping Fusina Venezia is one of the few campsites around Venice on the mainland. This site is also very popular with visitors to Venice as it is located directly on a landing stage. The crossing from here takes just under 20 minutes. The pitches can be chosen freely, but the campsite does not have access to the beach. We recommend it for shorter stays.

Marina di Venezia

The beautiful Marina di Venezia campsite south of Punta Sabbioni offers everything you need for a relaxing camping holiday on the Adriatic: Access to a wonderful private beach, a gigantic water park, first-class restaurants and exclusive glamping and rental accommodation. The luxurious campsite was built according to plans by Italian star architect Matteo Thun and is a real treat for all glamping fans. Dog owners can stay in their own area.

Favourite places in the region

In addition to the historic centre of Venice, the many islands in the lagoon are particularly popular excursion destinations. The picturesque Burano is known for its colourful fishermen's houses and the many restaurants serving seafood from the lagoon. The island of Murano, which has been a centre of glass art for centuries, is also popular. The tiny island of Torcello in the northern part of the lagoon is the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the peace and quiet on a walk.

Burano

Burano used to be a fishing village and has retained its charm to this day. Thanks to its colourful houses, the densely populated, car-free islet is a popular postcard motif and a great destination for a day trip. Burano is also famous for its traditional lace production, which can be admired today in the Lace Museum. Afterwards, head to one of the many fish restaurants with fresh specialities straight from the lagoon.

Murano

Murano is considered Venice's little sister and is similar to its larger neighbouring island in many ways. However, it is much smaller and can therefore be easily explored in one day. Murano is particularly famous for its centuries-old glassblowing craft. You can watch the world-famous Murano glass being made in many factories. The most beautiful products are exhibited in the glass museum.

Torcello

If you want to get to know the quiet and tranquil side of Venice, you should visit Torcello. Only a dozen or so inhabitants live on this tiny island - a wonderful place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the larger islands. In addition to the beautiful natural lagoon landscape, Torcello also has some architectural highlights to offer. The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and the charming church of Santa Fosca are particularly worth seeing.

Sights and excursion tips

  • St Mark's Square: Venice's most famous square is lined with numerous cafés and restaurants.
  • Doge's Palace: The ornate Gothic-style palace complex regularly hosts exhibitions and guided tours of the various rooms, including an armoury.
  • St Mark's Basilica: Gilded interior vaults and many mosaics adorn the internationally renowned cathedral. It also houses an interesting museum.
  • Rialto Bridge: The stone Rialto Bridge arches over the Grand Canal. Built in the 16th century, it is now an ornate covered pedestrian bridge with catering facilities.
  • Santa Maria della Salute: Visitors will find spectacular architecture in the domed church with its unique octagonal floor plan.

Tour tip

If you have a little time on your hands, you can set off on a road trip in northern Italy after your camping holiday in Venice. A great destination not far away is Lake Garda, for example, which can be perfectly circumnavigated in a few days. Surrounded by the mighty foothills of the southern Alps, the lake offers the perfect blend of mountain romance and Mediterranean lifestyle. It starts in the popular holiday resort of Torbole, from here the route leads through romantic little towns such as Garda, Lazise and Limone. If you like, you can start at any other point.
