with trusted ADAC classificationLocated in the centre of the European Alpine arc, Liechtenstein's campsites offer wonderful days camping in the mountains. The small principality, bordered by Austria and Switzerland, impresses with its Alpine landscapes rich in relief, criss-crossed by marvellous hiking trails and dotted with a multitude of medieval castles and fairytale palaces. Liechtenstein's capital Vaduz promises urban delights and an abundance of art and culture, and also boasts magnificent architectural monuments.
With an area of 160 square kilometres, the country is quite manageable. From the cosy Rhine Valley to the high Alpine peaks, camping in Liechtenstein can look very different.
Those who like to stay in the middle of the ups and downs of steep peaks will find beautiful campsites in Liechtenstein's high altitudes. In the south, the Rätikon with Liechtenstein's highest mountain, the Vorder Grauspitz, stretches up to 2,600 metres into the sky. The municipality of Triesenberg, which has around 2,600 inhabitants and includes the holiday and ski resort of Malbun at 1,600 metres above sea level, lies on the slopes. Further north, the resort of Planken looks out over the Rhine Valley from an altitude of almost 800 metres against the backdrop of the Three Sisters massif.
The idyllic Rhine Valley stretches through Liechtenstein between the dramatic mountain peaks of the Central Alps. When camping in the north of the valley, holidaymakers can enjoy the Ruggeller Riet nature reserve with its fens, old trees and colourful meadows. Nearby, the ruins of Schellenberg Castle and the Grossabünt leisure centre beckon visitors. On the more densely populated banks of the Rhine in the south of Liechtenstein, the capital Vaduz nestles against the river and welcomes visitors between modern architecture and medieval buildings, art galleries and colourful museums. The magnificent Vaduz Castle towers above it all. The Liechtenstein cable cars satisfy the desire for mountain air in many places.
Some love it, some not so much: the foehn is definitely one of Liechtenstein's most frequently occurring weather phenomena. The dry, warm downslope wind, which is not uncommon in the Alpine regions in general, can cause complaints such as tiredness or headaches in sensitive people. Its positive effects are Liechtenstein's high average temperatures and a long growing season. Moderate rainfall of 900 to 1,200 millimetres per year with around 1,600 hours of sunshine also provide Liechtenstein with wonderful fruit and the best wine-growing conditions. With an average of 13 days of rain per month, the summer months see the most precipitation, although this mainly falls at higher altitudes. The best time to visit for snow lovers is from December to April. The early onset of spring in the valley and the generally mild climate invite you to enjoy outdoor activities in the countryside until late autumn.
