If you can do without the heat, the tranquil campsites in Norway's northernmost and easternmost region are the perfect choice. Nestled in a barren, arctic landscape, many of the campsites in Finnmark offer a high degree of tranquillity and idyll. Most of the campsites are located close to a lake or fjord and are also happy to welcome four-legged campers.

Special features of camping in Finnmark

Finnmark is the least populated administrative district in the country and is located in the far north-east of Norway. Many campsites in Finnmark are located near water or close to the region's largest town, Alta. It is known as the city of the aurora borealis, as it is located directly under the northern lights oval and is therefore ideal for observing this natural phenomenon.

If you like hiking and want to take part in unusual activities on holiday, Finnmark is the right place for you. In addition to aurora hunting, many campsites also offer other exciting activities in the region, such as trips with sled dogs. The fjord off the coast of Finnmark is also home to many orcas and humpback whales, which campers can spot on organised whale watching tours.

Best time to visit

The months from June to September are generally considered the best time to visit Finnmark. Visitors can expect maximum temperatures of up to 15 degrees Celsius and relatively little rainfall - perfect for a camping holiday. Guests wishing to take part in a whale safari are best advised to arrive in November, December or January, as this is when numerous orcas and humpback whales are after the herring in the Altafjord.

To see the mystical celestial lights dancing beneath the twinkling stars, a camping holiday from October to March is recommended. With a bit of luck, campers can also watch this unique natural spectacle in September and April.
