North of the Lofoten Islands, Vesterålen is an Eldorado for active travellers and nature lovers. The coast of the Norwegian region is home to numerous whales, which can be seen up close on a boat trip. The Møysalen National Park with its unique flora and fauna is a hiking paradise. Thanks to the sparkling northern lights, you can experience bright nights while camping in Vesterålen.

Special features of camping on Vesterålen

Most of the campsites on Vesterålen are located directly on the coast and offer fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Some campsites on Vesterålen are located close to Sortland, where a bridge connects the archipelago with the mainland. It is not far from the campsites to the centre of the largest town in the holiday region, where there are numerous shopping opportunities. Nature lovers like to choose campsites in Vesterålen on the west coast of the archipelago, where the best places for whale watching can be found. The animals can also be seen from the campsites in the far north of Vesterålen near Andenes. The Andøya coastal hiking trail also passes by here. The campsites in Vesterålen near Møysalen National Park on the island of Hinnøya are also perfect starting points for hikes.

Best time to visit

Although the holiday region is located in the far north of Europe, the climate is relatively mild. This is due to the warm Gulf Stream that hits the coast from the Atlantic. There is frequent rainfall throughout the year, with May and June being the least rainy months. Guests are better prepared for wet conditions in autumn, however, with the mildest weather from June to August with average temperatures of up to 14 degrees Celsius. This is also the best time for whale watching, as impressive sperm whales can be seen along the coast in summer. From mid-May to mid-July, it stays light around the clock at the campsite on Vesterålen because of the fascinating midnight sun.
