As the Costa Verde in the north of Spain is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, holidaymakers are drawn to Asturias for camping. Thanks to the constant sea breeze, there are ideal wind conditions for sailing and surfing. Families feel particularly at home in sheltered bays with gently sloping beaches. Dogs are very welcome at many campsites.
The campsites in Asturias are located in the north of Spain between Galicia in the west and Cantabria in the east. Many of them are located directly by the sea. The campsites near Luarca are ideal for a carefree family holiday, as the beach here is located in a bay protected from the surf. If you want to combine a cultural holiday with a beach holiday, Gijón is the right place for camping in Asturias. From here, it is only a 30-minute drive to the province's capital, Oviedo, which is well worth a visit. The charming coastal town of Ribadesella with its impressive stalactite cave is also a perfect place for a camping holiday. The campsites in the Picos de Europa National Park are an ideal starting point for hikes.
The 2,320 km journey from Berlin to the coast of Asturias is easy thanks to the well-developed motorway network. Holidaymakers leave the German capital on the A9 to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz junction, where they turn off towards Frankfurt am Main. After the city, they take the A67 to Saarbrücken at the Mönchhof triangle. There are numerous hotels near the motorway in the vicinity of the city that are ideal for an overnight stay after the approximately 720 km drive from Berlin.
After Saarbrücken, it is only a few kilometres to the French border. Here the motorway network is subject to tolls, which are paid at the Péages toll stations. A practical cost calculator can be found on the website of the French motorway association ASFA.
Via Orleáns and Tours, the route follows the well-maintained road to Bordeaux, which is once again a good place to spend the night. From here, the distance to Asturias is still around 620 kilometres. Before drivers reach the Spanish border, it is worth taking a break in the renowned seaside resort of Biarritz. Once in Spain, continue along the A8 motorway along the coast to Bilbao and your booked campsite in Asturias.
Romantic palaces, the cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo and the Tito Bustillo cave in Ribadesella are among the cultural highlights of Asturias.
In the Principality of Asturias, culture lovers will come across countless relics from the past in the major cities. The capital Oviedo is well worth a visit: the late Gothic cathedral of San Salvador dominates the cityscape here.
The romantic cloister and the colourful rose window are particularly impressive. The sacred building is also known for the Cámara Santa, which appears inconspicuous due to its simple architecture. However, the interior conceals true artistic treasures in the form of the valuable agate shrine and the victory cross set with precious stones. Those interested in the history of the holiday region should visit the Museum of Archaeology, which is housed in the historic Velarde Palace. On display is pre-Romanesque art from the 8th century onwards, such as Ligurian artefacts and sculptures.
The coastal town of Ribadesella is worth a visit for several reasons: after all, there is a fantastic sandy beach on the coast where you can cool off. The Sella is also ideal for canoe trips. In August, hundreds of water sports enthusiasts flock to the river for the international canoe festival.
Near Ribadesella, the Tito Bustillo cave is also a remarkable attraction in Asturias: colourful paintings from the Palaeolithic period can be seen here, including horses and female figures.
Fantastic beaches and breathtaking hiking trails lure you to Asturias for camping.
One of the most beautiful hiking routes on the Asturian coast starts in the picturesque village of Los Miradores. The approximately 4.5 km long Senda Costera de Los Miradores leads along the Spanish Way of St James to the beautiful Playa Aguilar beach. The views of the Atlantic Ocean along the way are breathtaking.
30 short routes invite you to explore the fascinating Pico de Europa National Park on foot. The routes take you past clear mountain lakes near Covadonga, through the cool beech forest near Las Ilcas or the romantic Cares Gorge.
From the campsites in Asturias, bathers can head to the well-tended beaches of the Costa Verde. The beach at Cuevas de Mar boasts breathtaking views of the Picos de Europa National Park and rugged rocks that form an interesting contrast to the fine sand.
At around 1 km, Playa de Rodiles near Villaviciosa is one of the longest sandy beaches in Asturias. As the water only deepens slowly here, this stretch of coast is also perfect for families with small children. The almost white beach of Santa Marina near Ribadesella is also ideal for a beach holiday.
Asturias' cuisine is original and traditional. Many dishes have been prepared by chefs using the same recipes for many generations: The popular regional dish fabada, for example, tastes particularly savoury thanks to hearty ingredients such as chorizo, black pudding and bacon. Together with white beans, the meal cooks on the cooker for hours before it ends up on the plate. Delicious fish stew with tomatoes, lobster, crab and other seafood is also characterised by its long cooking time. The aromatic mould cheese Cabrales, which matures for up to four months in mountain caves, is famous the world over. Sidra cider, which is typical of the region and served from ceramic jugs, goes particularly well with a delicious meal.
The North Atlantic coast of Spain is characterised by a mild and humid climate, which favours the lush vegetation on the Costa Verde. Guests camping in Asturias experience mild winters and not too hot summers in the seaside resorts. From May to September, the friendly atmosphere prevails with eight to nine hours of sunshine per day.
Guests should definitely take rainwear with them, as El orbayu drizzles regularly even during the warm season. From June onwards, the Atlantic warms up to 20 degrees Celsius and above, and the water temperatures are suitable for swimming until October. One exception is the high mountains in the Pico de Europa National Park, where the climate is alpine with snowfall.
