Camping for water sports enthusiasts is one of the most popular types of holiday on the island of Mali Lošinj. The Adriatic Sea is one of the top areas for sailing, for example. There are also excellent conditions for surfing and paddling. Camping on the beach is also perfect for swimming fans and families with children.

Special features of camping in Mali Lošinj

It is above all the campsites close to the beach that make Mali Lošinj so special. The island in the Kvarner Bay of Croatia offers holidaymakers with motorhomes the best conditions for all-round relaxation on the blue Adriatic. Many of the pitches are surrounded by picturesque woodland through which you can go on short hikes, while off the coast there are excellent sailing and surfing spots for travellers. Croatia is internationally renowned for its excellent marinas. Many holidaymakers head for one island after another and get to know the picturesque coastal formations. Harbour towns such as Mali Lošinj itself inspire with plenty of charm and diverse nightlife options.

Getting there

To get to Mali Lošinj or the Croatian coast by motorhome, holidaymakers must first travel to Austria. The Alpine state can be reached either via Bavaria or the Czech Republic. The latter option is particularly practical for all those travelling from eastern Germany. Once you have reached Austria, a toll sticker is purchased at the border. This allows you to drive on the country's toll roads. Tolls are also payable at the next stopover. However, these are significantly lower in Slovenia. If you want to make a few cultural stops on your long journey, you can take a look at the sights in Graz, Klagenfurt and Ljubljana. It is not far from Slovenia to the Adriatic coast in the north of Croatia. In Ljubljana, camping fans are only 260 kilometres away from their destination. On the way to the island of Lošinj, it is worth making a short detour to the harbour town of Rijeka, where a rich cultural heritage can be visited. From the Istrian peninsula, take the ferry to Cres and then cross over to Lošinj. An alternative route leads via the island of Krk, where the ferry to Cres is also used.

Activities and excursions

Mali Lošinj inspires with dreamlike seascapes for swimming, sailing and relaxing on the beach.

Sailing paradise in the Croatian Adriatic

Due to the sheltered location of the marina, Mali Lošinj is one of the most popular starting points for a sailing trip on the Croatian coast. The harbour can be reached from the west and east through the small Privlaka Passage. This means that the island can be explored quickly and easily from both sides. A number of sailing courses and boat hire services are offered on site.

The dolphins of Lošinj

The islands of Cres and Lošinj are known for the numerous dolphins that live off their coasts. The total population is currently estimated at 120 animals. An excursion from Mali Lošinj to Veli Lošinj, where the marine mammals can best be observed, is well worthwhile. Local conservation organisations provide information about the life of dolphins in the Adriatic. Pure bathing fun on the beaches of Mali Lošinj One of the most beautiful beaches in Mali Lošinj is the bay of Cikat. Here, travellers can relax on comfortable sun loungers and take advantage of the many family-friendly leisure activities on offer. Children will especially enjoy the nearby Aquapark Cikat with more than five pool complexes.

Gastronomy

Gastronomy on the Croatian coast thrives on the bounty of the sea. In the traditional restaurants in the harbour of Mali Lošinj, gourmets can order large fish platters with fresh catches from the Adriatic. Fried and grilled shrimps and octopus are also popular, as are Ćevapčići, Croatia's famous minced meat rolls with spicy seasoning. They are served with bread from the stone oven and ajvar pepper paste. As a variation, you can also order pljeskavica, which resembles a large, crispy fried burger patty. You can try the specialities at one of the stalls in the harbour or in one of the typical konoba restaurants in Mali Lošinj. These include the Za Kantuni and the Dišpet.

Best time to visit

In the Kvarner Bay and therefore also in Mali Lošinj, the bathing season starts in June. Some brave souls jump into the water as early as the end of May at a fresh 19 degrees Celsius. Apart from that, the temperatures in the Adriatic reach maximums of between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius between June and September, making them ideal for swimming. In the air, the mercury sometimes reaches 30 degrees Celsius. The average maximum in summer is around 28°C. Many water sports enthusiasts also appreciate the spring and autumn days on Lošinj. In April and May, as well as in October, temperatures of between 14 and 21 degrees Celsius can be expected. The mild climate also tempts visitors to go hiking during this period.
