Occitania, with its Mediterranean coastline in the south-west of France, is ideal for camping on the beach. Bathing fans and water sports enthusiasts will get their money's worth here. Away from the coast, the Pyrenees tempt you to go on extensive hiking excursions. Culture vultures should definitely visit historically significant cities such as Carcassonne, Montpellier and Toulouse. There you can visit medieval fortresses and magnificent sandstone cathedrals, for example.
Most holidaymakers in Occitania are drawn to the campsites on the Mediterranean. The coast of Narbonne, Montpellier, Séte and Perpignan in particular offers excellent conditions for water sports. The winds here are ideal for surfing and kitesurfing. In the hinterland, the Cévennes National Park entices visitors to go hiking. The mountain range overwhelms visitors with its abruptly rising granite cliffs and green-covered gorges such as the Gorges du Tarn.
The Occitan Pyrenees offer similarly beautiful hiking terrain. In the south of the region, for example, there is a national park named after the mountains, on the northern edge of which lies the famous Catholic pilgrimage site of Lourdes. The higher altitudes are also home to spas such as Ax-les-Thermes with its healing springs.
The bathing season on the Mediterranean coast begins in May. Temperatures then rise to up to 22 degrees Celsius. In the following months, peak temperatures of between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius can be expected. The Mediterranean is just as warm - 25 degrees Celsius is not uncommon in July and August. Excursionists and water sports enthusiasts also use the months of September and October for their holidays in Occitania.
It is significantly colder in the mountains than on the coast all year round. In Lourdes, for example, summer temperatures are between 16 and 24 degrees Celsius. In May and June as well as in September and October, you should expect a maximum of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius.
