The A4 motorway, which connects Milan with Venice, also runs along Lake Garda. Here you take the Peschiera del Garda exit. Travellers passing through Austria between autumn and spring should note that winter tyres are compulsory between 1 November and 15 April. Depending on the place of departure, a longer break on the way to Italy is recommended. The route from Hamburg is around 1,220 kilometres, from Berlin it is around 1,010 kilometres and from Cologne around 950 kilometres. Stopovers should be planned in here.

The typical red wine Bardolino comes from the eastern shore, the popular white wine Lugana from the southern shore of the lake. Both taste excellent in a sunny spot with a view of the water.

Best time to visit

The climate on Italy's largest lake is Mediterranean and mild. Average annual temperatures are around 15 degrees Celsius. From April, the thermometer regularly climbs to 15 degrees and offers perfect conditions for cycling tours and hikes. October is also ideal for active guests with temperatures of up to 18 degrees Celsius, while the lake is perfect for swimming from May to October. When the 30-degree mark is reached in the summer months, the water is an excellent place to cool off at up to 24 degrees Celsius. Sun worshippers and swimmers flock to Lake Garda between mid-June and mid-September. Incidentally, it doesn't get really cold on the mountain lake, with temperatures only dropping below freezing in exceptional cases.
