The ruggedly charming Nordland region in Norway offers campers plenty of vast, wild nature, but also good transport links. Camping by the sea, on the coast and by the fjord is just as possible as in the immediate vicinity of the European motorway. Nature lovers will get their money's worth on the 80 or so islands of the coveted Lofoten archipelago. Most of the campsites are located on Nordland's archipelago coast to the south.
The long coastal strip of Nordland stretches for around 500 kilometres as the crow flies from south to north. High mountains with glaciers merge into fjords from the east and finally flow into the extensive archipelago coast around the Arctic Circle.
Most of Nordland's campsites are located by the water - often at the foot of or with a view of the surrounding mountains. Some of the campsites are idyllically located on the Lofoten archipelago and are surrounded by the sea, so to speak. On the campsites south of Lofoten, along the archipelago coast, you can also get a taste of the sea air. Inland, climbers and mountain hikers will find campsites at the foot of the mountain massif and directly by the fjord. The region offers plenty of activities for nature lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts - from water sports and fishing to mountain and glacier hikes.
Due to the favourable influence of the Atlantic Ocean, the climate in Nordland is quite mild along the coast. Between May and September, average temperatures are usually between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. The south-easterly winds bring large amounts of moisture, especially in autumn and winter.
The months with the least rainfall in the region are April to June. Northwards and inland, towards the mountains, the climate is colder on average than near the coast. Even in the warmer months, the average temperature here rarely rises above 10 degrees Celsius. Campers should definitely watch the spectacle of the midnight sun: The Lofoten Islands are ideal for this. The red-orange natural phenomenon can be experienced here between the end of May and mid-July.
