Camping on the Swedish Baltic Sea coast: Småland in the south-east of Sweden has a beautiful Baltic Sea landscape. You can really enjoy your time out in Scandinavia on idyllic beaches. Wonderful pitches with a view of the sea are a real treat on a camping holiday. Whether bathing fun, fishing or water sports - the Baltic coast of Småland can fulfil every wish. The small towns and villages directly on the coast are also worth a visit and have a very special charm. Larger towns such as Oskarshamn or Västervik are just as worth a visit as Mönsterås or the beautiful Pataholm.
Vimmerby: The tranquil town of Vimmerby in the heart of Småland is a popular destination for travellers. Everything here revolves around the world-famous children's book author Astrid Lindgren (1907 - 2002), whose life is explained in more detail at the "Astrid Lindgrens Näs" information centre, including the house where she was born. Michel from Lönneberga, Ronja the Robber's Daughter, Kalle Blomquist, Karlsson from the Roof and of course Pippi Longstocking are brought to life in many places. You can visit the famous houses of the "Children of Bullerbü" or the film location of Michel. There is also an amusement park, Astrid Lindgren's Värld, which is a great addition to a family holiday.
Lake Vättern: The second largest lake in the country is located in northern Småland. Due to its size, it can certainly be described as an inland sea, as wind and weather have a considerable influence on the region. There are various options for holidaymakers in Sweden. The sandy beaches on Vättern are responsible for the relaxing moments, which can be savoured in combination with water sports. Culture lovers can visit the provincial capital Jönköping with the only matchstick museum or the bird museum, the radio museum or the local open-air museum. We recommend Gränna, where the famous sugar sticks (polkagris) are made and there is a boat trip to the beautiful island of Visingsö.
In the Kingdom of Glass: The Kingdom of Glass (Glasriket) is the glass heart of Sweden and comprises no less than 15 glassworks. Glassworks such as Kosta Glasbruk, Boda Glasbruk and Orrefors Glasbruk are known far beyond the borders of Småland. The famous glass has been produced in this densely wooded region and shipped all over the world since 1742. Whether directly on the shores of the numerous lakes, in the neighbourhood of the glassworks or in the middle of the idyllic forest landscape - there are numerous campsites in the Kingdom of Glass that can serve as a starting point for a discovery tour.
Surrounded by nature: Småland is always worth a trip, especially because of its typical Swedish natural landscape. So why not camp close to nature and give this booming form of holiday back a little of its original character. In the region, for example, Målilla is located directly on the banks of Lake Hesjön with a bathing area and pitches in the shade of the surrounding forests. Another experience is Vildmarkscamping Hätteboda, where guests can merge with nature and chop their own wood. South of Jönköping, in an area of forest and open fields, Hoks Naturcamping is well worth a visit. The small bathing area with jetty on the riverbank, the idyllic pitches and the cabins epitomise Swedish cosiness.
Älmhult: On the southern border of Småland, Älmhult is a special destination for campers. This is the birthplace of IKEA and the history of the furniture empire becomes an extraordinary experience in the IKEA Museum. Sjöstugans Camping in Älmhult on Lake Möckeln is a great place to stay right in the neighbourhood. The nearby river Helge å is ideal for canoeing adventures through the region.
In terms of prices, Sweden is the cheapest camping country in Europe, with an average price of 39 euros for an overnight stay on a pitch. Ultimately, there are local differences, as sites that are very close to nature only charge very low prices for a motorhome pitch. However, there are also sites with extensive facilities and services that are somewhat more expensive than the average price. In general, however, this guideline is an excellent way to plan a camping holiday in Småland.
The preferences of the guests are decisive here. In Småland, there are nature campsites with facilities that do not focus on toilets, showers and baby changing facilities of a high standard. Instead, you can spend the night on the shore of a beautiful lake or in the middle of the woods. Those who attach great importance to extensive sanitary facilities will have to head for somewhat larger campsites. Thanks to the filters here on the portal, it is very easy to find out which campsites meet your requirements.
The weather in southern Sweden is not fundamentally different from that in northern Germany. Warm summer months characterise camping in Småland, as the Swedes themselves appreciate this time of year for a stay. Due to the relatively mild winters in the south, overnight stays in the cold season are not impossible. With average summer temperatures of around 23 degrees Celsius, this can really be savoured. The water temperatures in the Baltic Sea and the lakes can vary considerably. The temperature of the lakes depends mainly on the depth and location.
Småland has an excellent infrastructure. There are small shops almost everywhere in the towns and villages and supermarkets in the larger towns with a very wide range of products. It's worth visiting small farms or fields for regional specialities. For example, you can pick your own strawberries or buy potatoes. Transport is somewhat more rural. Bus connections are available in many places and are particularly popular in the morning or early evening with frequent journeys. During the day, however, this can be very limited. Larger towns and villages also have regional train connections. Växjö and Jönköping score particularly well in this respect, as they also have rail connections to Gothenburg, Malmö and Stockholm.
Småland is the perfect place for a holiday close to nature and full of adventure. This beautiful region in southern Sweden boasts a breathtaking natural landscape with lakes and forests. The range of campsites is varied and pitches can be booked. This means you can plan your camping holiday in Småland well in advance. But even for spontaneous decisions, there is always a place to stay.
