In the less densely populated region of Västra Götaland, there is plenty of space for camping, and the individual pitches of the campsites are nestled in idyllic forest areas further apart. Families can take up a lot of space here with their dogs and the boats they have brought with them and keep to themselves if they wish. However, it is also possible to socialise with your neighbours around the campfire at any time.
The waves that sometimes occur on the two large lakes, Vänern and Vättern, mean that canoe trips are more likely to take place closer to the shore. On the other hand, there are countless smaller lakes between these two bodies of water that characterise the region, inviting campers to enjoy water sports activities in summer. Campsites in Västra Götaland tend to be located on the shores of lakes and most of them also have romantic holiday homes for rent.
Places such as Mullsjö and the lake of the same name with an extensive hiking area, numerous hiking trails and other lakes such as Straken and the circular Trollsjön are not only popular with camping enthusiasts in the warmer months. In winter, the paths are transformed into cross-country ski trails, so you can enjoy skiing through the woods. In the evening, winter sports fans can warm up in the well-heated wooden chalet.
Summer is generally the best time to go camping in Sweden. The midsummer festival, which is also celebrated at many campsites, is cheerful and colourful. Spring and autumn are also ideal for hiking along the crystal-clear lakes. In winter, cross-country skiing is the order of the day in the Västra Götaland region. Around Mullsjö, Swedish professionals even train in autumn on special roller skis for winter sports events.
If the weather doesn't play ball and rain makes the numerous leisure activities around the cosy campsites difficult, a visit to the aviation museum in Karlsborg on the Göta Canal is a good idea. Rune stones along the way and the Bronze Age tombs at Ekornavallen can also be marvelled at with an umbrella.
