The benefits of the Baltic Sea on Fehmarn are extensively utilised, for example by going surfing, canoeing and diving while camping. Less active campers sunbathe on the beach, children build sandcastles and couples look for quiet bays to relax in. Some campsites have a marvellous view of the sea, making even everyday activities such as cooking a pleasure.

Destinations

The 5-star Camping Wulfener Hals in Wulfen is a campsite right on the beach on Fehmarn. The multi-award-winning site is located between the pleasantly lapping Baltic Sea and a quiet shallow bay. Campers feel at home here on the fantastic long beach and nudists also get their money's worth on a separate naturist section. Surfers are drawn to the Burger Binnensee, where beginners can also have fun. Or you can walk a few metres along the sandy beach and surf the waves of the Baltic Sea opposite.

The resort boasts a very wide-ranging leisure programme: For the little ones, there are animated musicals, evening hikes, children's parties, shows and discos, and barbecues on the beach. The three extensive water sports schools on site offer courses in diving, kitesurfing, stand-up paddling and catamaran and canoeing. Special extras include guided wreck dives, a circus tent with a show stage, kettcar hire, an 18-hole golf course and a 9-hole short-hole course.

Insel-Camp Fehmarn is also popular for camping on the beach. This quiet site has also been awarded 5 stars and is located in Meeschendorf on a beautiful Baltic Sea beach. In addition to the attractive bathing facilities, there is a health and wellness area with various saunas, massage options and a relaxation zone from which you can enjoy a view of the sea. At Insel-Camp Fehmarn, many holidaymakers are impressed by the sanitary facilities: these are flooded with light, comfortable and accompanied by soft music. In the high season, campers also appreciate the comprehensive entertainment and sports programme.

Top tips

  • If you are camping on Fehmarn with your dog, you should know where the best dog beaches are: At the Meeschendorf dog beach - in the south-east of the island - there is a beach chair hire service, a kiosk and a sanitary facility. In the north is the Grüner Brink dog beach and if you are on holiday in the west, you can visit the same beach in Bojendorf.
  • When camping on the beach on Fehmarn, it's hard to avoid having a cocktail in a beach bar. For example, in the 360 degree bar on the south beach, where you can sit comfortably on the large roof terrace - with an enchanting view of the surroundings. Or you can lie on a deckchair right on the beach and enjoy a refreshing drink.

Activities for camping on the beach

Fabulous bays, beaches and seascapes on Fehmarn are best discovered on foot, by bike or on a boat trip. Or you can simply enjoy fishing on a single beach in a marvellous natural setting.

Travelling around Fehmarn on two wheels

There is hardly anything better than a bike tour to explore as many of Fehmarn's beaches as possible. There are numerous cycle paths on the island, but those who are enthusiastic about the coasts and the sea should choose the route that runs around the island. This almost 70-kilometre tour runs along the beautiful water and through idyllic landscapes. For example, the picturesque Wallnau nature reserve is on the way.

A hike with a visible reward

Of course, hiking is also an excellent way to get to know the island and its beaches better. An attractive route runs from the harbour settlement of Orth to the Flügge lighthouse. This can be visited and provides visitors with an exceptionally good view of the surrounding area. The route, which is just under 3 kilometres long, also leads through the beautiful Krummsteert-Sulsdorfer Wiek nature reserve.

Catch your own fish for a barbecue at the campsite

Fishing is also a great activity on the Baltic Sea beaches: Numerous quiet spots by the sea invite you to do so. The sea between the Bay of Mecklenburg and the Bay of Kiel - the so-called Fehmarn Sound - is extremely ideal. Flatfish, cod, sea trout, garfish and eels can be caught here. If you are new to fishing, it is best to come to Niobe for surf fishing.

Top tours by boat

Fehmarn can be reached by car from Germany via a bridge. But what would a holiday on an island be without a boat trip? You can explore different regions of Fehmarn on a sailing boat, go on a guided deep-sea fishing tour or simply hire a small boat and discover different beaches on your own. Day trips to Denmark are also possible - from Puttgarden you can be in the neighbouring country in just 45 minutes by ferry.
