France is a dog-friendly country. Four-legged friends are welcome in public and are also welcome in many restaurants and cafés. This is because the region impresses both culturally and with its varied nature, making it the perfect camping destination: Swimming, hiking or kayaking are just some of the local leisure activities that visitors can plan from the dog-friendly campsites.

Top tips

  • Even though dogs are part of everyday life in France, the animal family members are not tolerated on every beach. In Argelès, not far from the city of Perpignan, there is a wonderful dog beach. Here, four-legged friends can romp around to their heart's content and even take a dip in the clear sea water. The beach sections for dogs start near the nature reserve and behind the dyke.
  • In the south of France, you can explore the unspoilt world of the Pyrenees: secluded mountain villages, deep gorges and imposing peaks. The choice of hiking trails for every level is inexhaustible. Dog lovers particularly recommend the two-hour circular trail around Lake Bouillouses, as it leads through beautiful valleys and the paths are easy to walk on.

Activities and excursions

Whether leisurely or adventurous: camping with a dog in the south of France is the best way to put together a varied leisure programme. Visitors can choose between sporting activities or cultural visits. There are also numerous excursions on offer for families, such as a train journey through the Pyrenees.

The dream beaches of Nice

Picturesque Nice is not far from the Italian border. The Venetian influence can already be felt in the historic city centre. Nice has 15 private and 20 public beaches. There is also a nudist beach in Nice. A dog-friendly campsite can be found in a prime location: The sea as well as the shopping mile are not far away.

Hiking in Languedoc-Roussillon

The Languedoc-Roussillon region is steeped in history and has over 160 trekking routes. From exciting long-distance hiking trails to leisurely strolls and historic pilgrimage routes, visitors are sure to find a route that fulfils their every wish. You can hike through green valleys and wine-growing areas all the way to the Spanish border. Recommended, easy day trips include the le sentier des cabanes trail or les bornes miliaires.

Harbour walk in Marseille

The sail masts and colourfully painted boats on the turquoise blue water make for a great photo opportunity. The old harbour of Marseille, the "Vieux Port", was once the economic centre of the city. Today, it serves as a port of call for the numerous small fishing boats that bring fresh produce to the daily fish market.

Take the funicular up to 2,000 metres above sea level

The "Petit train d'Artouste" mountain railway near Fabrèges takes visitors and dogs up to the most beautiful peaks of the Pyrenees high mountains. The wind blows in your face, the rails rattle and the view of the valley and lake is unique. The railway was built in 1920 to supply a dam in the mountains. Today it is an attraction for many travellers. In addition to numerous unusual plant and bird species, with a bit of luck you can also spot the Pyrenean marmot from your seat.

Events

Every year, the south of France hosts some of the country's most famous and important festivals, which you can reach directly from your campsite.

May

  • The world-famous Cannes Film Festival takes place in May. Invited guests watch the best international documentaries and films.

June

  • The Rio Loco Festival in Toulouse is an international music festival that mixes the rhythms and sounds of Africa, France and Spain for three days.

July

  • On 14 July, France celebrates Bastille Day, its bank holidays. This is celebrated throughout the country with street parties and parades. The day ends with an impressive fireworks display in all major cities.
