GoodThe East Frisian Islands lined up off the mainland coast of Lower Saxony harbour great recreational potential. The very limited road traffic - private motor vehicles are only permitted on Borkum and Norderney - ensures a particularly relaxed atmosphere when camping on the island. Extensive sandy beaches and day trips through the mudflats between the island and the mainland offer plenty of variety, especially when camping with children. Young and old alike can explore the island at a leisurely pace by bike.
Lush sandy beaches can be found on the seaward side of the East Frisian Islands. Behind them, dunes rise inland. The sides facing the mainland, on the other hand, are characterised by salt marshes and mudflats. From the chain of islands between Norderney and Wangerooge, you can go on mudflat walks towards the mainland at low tide.
The campsites on the East Frisian Islands are mainly located in sheltered areas between the dunes - usually not far from the beach and the sea. Cycling tours with or without children are just as suitable as hiking tours across or around the island or through the mudflats to the mainland. Those who love wind, sea and nature will get their money's worth sailing and surfing.
The stimulating climate on the East Frisian Islands, which is beneficial to health, is significantly influenced by the Gulf Stream. The climate is temperate with high humidity. Compared to the mainland, winters are cooler and summers are milder - so there are hardly any extremely cold or extremely hot days on the islands. While calm westerly winds predominantly blow across the islands in summer, storms become more frequent from autumn onwards.
Although there is an average of 16 to 17 days of rain per month on the islands, the rainfall quickly disappears due to the prevailing winds. Most hours of sunshine are spread over the months of April to September. The average maximum temperature in the peak summer months of July and August is around 19 degrees. The water temperature is between 10 and 20 degrees from May to October.
