The scenically attractive Hohwacht Bay boasts beautiful, long Baltic Sea beaches and is therefore just right for all those who are looking forward to carefree camping right by the sea. Get on your surfboard as soon as you get up or go sailing - camping for water sports enthusiasts is also particularly popular in this region.

Special features of camping in the Bay of Hohwacht

The picturesque Bay of Hohwacht in Schleswig-Holstein nestles idyllically on the Baltic Sea between Kiel and Fehmarn. Most of the campsites in Hohwachter Bucht are located close to the sea or just a few kilometres away. Camping in this pretty spot is ideal for all those who want to spend a relaxing beach holiday. The distinctive and well-developed tourist region is particularly popular in the summer months. Various, partly sheltered stretches of beach in the bay invite young and old to swim, and there are also water sports providers on site. Camping in Hohwacht Bay is suitable for families as well as couples or singles, for sun worshippers as well as active holidaymakers.

How to get there

Hohwachter Bucht is easily accessible by car or motorhome via several routes. The A1 motorway coming from the south of Germany takes holidaymakers almost directly to the bay. It offers several exits, for example at Oldenburg in Holstein. Drivers coming from the east can take the A20 or A24 motorways to the A1. Those travelling from Munich should first take the A9 and A7 to Hamburg and then change to the A1. The average distance to Hohwachter Bucht from Cologne, for example, is around 570 kilometres, from Berlin 400 kilometres and from Munich 920 kilometres.

During the holiday season, you should expect heavier traffic towards the Baltic Sea, so it is always advisable to avoid driving at weekends and possibly drive at night or in the early hours of the morning. Nice places to stop along the way include the Dammer Berger rest area (A1) with its great views or the Lohfeldener Rüssel car park (A7 near Kassel), which has fitness equipment available.

Destinations on the Bay of Hohwacht

Lütjenburg and Hohwacht are particularly worth a visit on the Bay of Hohwacht.

The historic town of Lütjenburg

The pretty little town of Lütjenburg offers a number of shops, cafés and sights. These include the Turmhügelburg, a replica of a castle. Various events for young and old take place there, especially in the summer months, such as medieval festivals and Viking days. Also worth a visit is the Ice Age Museum, which vividly explains what Schleswig-Holstein must have looked like during the ice ages. A particularly striking building in Lütjenburg is the dyer's house from 1576, which is the oldest surviving building in the town. The baroque town hall from 1790 with its red bricks and mansard roof is also worth a visit when you are in Lütjenburg.

The enchanting Hohwacht

The small but charming and family-friendly village of Hohwacht gives Hohwacht Bay its name. It offers several restaurants and pubs in the immediate vicinity of the sea. Young adventurers look forward to the Piratenland adventure playground. A variety of elaborate play equipment just a few steps from the beach ensures that children can let off steam. Holidaymakers will also find a golf course and a mini golf course in Hohwacht. Last but not least, Hohwacht is known for its fine sandy, white beaches with clean water that invite you to swim, as well as for its promenade including the "Flunder" viewing platform, which juts out into the Baltic Sea.

Activities and excursions

Swimming and cycling are among the most popular activities on a holiday at Hohwachter Bucht.

Swimming and water sports

Various kilometre-long sandy beaches delight holiday guests in Hohwacht Bay. The sand is fine and clean, and the water is very shallow in many places. This makes Hohwacht Bay ideal for a camping holiday with children. There are also several dog beaches (for example in Sehlendorf and Hohwacht). In Behrensdorf there is a family beach and a dog beach as well as a nudist beach. If you are interested in water sports, the local surfing and sailing school is the right place for you: equipment can be hired here and the school also offers windsurfing and kitesurfing courses.

Cycling in the picturesque Hohwacht Bay

The region is perfect for cycling tours through the idyllic landscape. An extensive network of cycle paths makes it a great destination for cyclists. It is best to bring your own bike on a camping holiday at Hohwachter Bucht or simply hire one at one of the hire stations, where electric bikes can also be rented. There is a large selection of beautiful tours, for example around the tranquil Sehlendorf inland lake.

Gastronomy

One of the culinary highlights of this region is fish in different variations, which can often be bought freshly caught by the sea. Sandwiches with fried fish, prawns or herring are ideal as a snack between meals. Eel, mackerel and salmon are also on the table and are often enjoyed in the form of soup, stew or fish cakes. But there are also many delicacies apart from fish: you should try a sweet Franzbrötchen for breakfast or hearty roast wild boar and Holstein potato soup when you are on holiday in Hohwacht Bay. After a meal, you can enjoy a drink of Küstennebel (schnapps with aniseed) or Aquavit in good company.

Best time to visit

The North German Baltic Sea coast has a temperate climate. This means that neither very cold winters nor very hot summers are to be expected. Occasionally there is rain on the Baltic Sea coast, but holidaymakers can also look forward to numerous sunny days, as the region is one of the sunniest in Germany. Camping in Hohwacht Bay is particularly popular in the warmer summer months. The camping season at most of the sites in Hohwacht Bay usually starts at Easter and lasts until the autumn holidays. From May onwards, the average daily temperatures rise to 18 degrees Celsius. The water reaches temperatures of around 16 degrees Celsius in June, and in August temperatures can reach over 20 degrees Celsius.
