Alpine meadows in bloom, the foothills of the Alps on the horizon, the cool water right outside the caravan door: Lake Ammersee offers all the ingredients for a relaxing camping holiday in a class of its own. Bavaria's third-largest lake is a popular destination for families with children to swim and relax in the sun. Water sports enthusiasts can explore the Ammersee by surfing, sailing or diving. And for active holidaymakers, there is a first-class network of cycling and hiking trails in the region.

Special features of camping on the Ammersee

With its 47 km², Lake Ammersee in Upper Bavaria is the third largest lake in the state and one of the main attractions of the "Fünfseenland", as the region between Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg is also known. Thanks to the excellent water quality and good infrastructure, the Ammersee is a popular destination for bathing holidaymakers and families in particular, who spend relaxing days by the water here in summer. But water sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth at the Ammersee: pedal boats, motorboats or small dinghies can be hired around the lake to test out the gentle waves of the water and jump off the boat into the lake. The Bavarian lake cruise on Lake Ammersee is a very enjoyable way to get across the water: the lake's fleet includes the Herrsching paddle steamer and the Diessen paddle steamer. The most beautiful campsites and motorhome pitches are located on the eastern and western shores of Lake Ammersee near the towns of Utting, Dießing and Herrsching. Here you will also find bathing areas, beaches, sailing schools and the opportunity to hire stand-up paddle boards and other equipment. The nearby Pilsensee, the second smallest lake in the Fünfseenland region, is also worth a visit. A large part of the shore is now a nature reserve. The best way to explore it is on the Seeweg cycle route, which runs within sight of the Pilsensee.

Popular campsites on the Ammersee

The facilities at the campsites are generally excellent. In addition to pitches for caravans and motorhomes, some also offer rental accommodation, mobile homes and holiday flats. There are also some motorhome pitches on the eastern shore of the Ammersee. Dogs are allowed on many campsites on the Ammersee.

Camping Utting am Ammersee

Located on the western shore of Lake Ammersee, the beautiful Utting campsite near the village of the same name is a great place to go for swimming fans and water sports enthusiasts. There is a large leisure area with sunbathing lawn and boat hire nearby. The site is also an excellent starting point for cycle tours around the lake. The neighbouring beer gardens are the perfect place to end the day.

Camping St. Alban

A real feel-good site in one of the most beautiful places on Lake Ammersee. Thanks to its lakeside location, guests can start the day with a refreshing dip in the lake. Afterwards, they can enjoy breakfast on the terrace of the excellent restaurant with a stunning view of the small town of Herrsching and the Andecks monastery. As the site is small and extremely popular, it is advisable to book well in advance.

Pilsensee campsite

In the immediate vicinity of the Ammersee is the beautifully situated Pilsensee campsite on the bathing lake of the same name. There is direct access to the beach from the campsite. Guests can also hire boats here and explore the beautiful natural lake with its turquoise-coloured water. There is also a highly recommended restaurant on site serving delicious regional specialities.

Favourite destinations in the region

There is a lot to discover around the Ammersee. One of the most beautiful places in the region is certainly Landsberg an der Lech. The small town is known throughout the region for its beautiful, well-preserved old town and is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll through the town. Active holidaymakers should pay a visit to Utting. The municipality on the western shore of Lake Ammersee offers a huge range of leisure activities for swimmers, water sports enthusiasts and active holidaymakers. The village of Dießen at the southern end of the lake is very popular with those seeking relaxation. It is home to one of the most beautiful landscape parks in the region.

Landsberg

The small town of Landsberg on the banks of the Lech is known as the "Rothenburg of Upper Bavaria" and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places around the Ammersee. The well-preserved old town centre boasts numerous architectural gems, including the historic town hall, the magnificent Gothic-style Bayerntor gate and several beautiful churches. A stroll through the town is sweetened by numerous cosy cafés and rustic inns, where the proverbial Bavarian Gemütlichkeit comes alive. A favourite destination for families is the nearby "Pössinger Au" wildlife park in the heart of the Lechtal valley between Landsberg and Schongau.

Utting

The third-largest municipality on Lake Ammer is the perfect destination for active holidaymakers and water lovers. There is a great lido with a 10-metre-high diving platform, boat hire, sailing schools and a SUP centre right on site. If you want to get up high, you should pay a visit to the Ammersee high ropes course. The climbing garden in the design of a pirate ship is a popular excursion destination, especially for families with children. A boat trip on the paddle steamer is a more leisurely experience. Nature lovers can explore the beautiful surroundings in the "Seeholz" nature reserve between Holzhausen and Riederau and on the idyllic Ammerseepfad trail.

Dießen

The state-recognised climatic health resort of Dießen is a popular attraction for those seeking relaxation. The best way to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere is on a walk through the small market town. The Marienmünster is particularly worth a visit. The magnificent church with its unique ceiling paintings is considered the "jewel of Dießen" and is one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Germany. An insider tip for nature lovers is the Schacky Park to the south of the town. The English-style landscape park enchants visitors with its romantic, enchanted atmosphere and is a great destination for long walks, where everyday life quickly becomes a distant memory.

Sights and excursion tips

  • Andechs Monastery: Once an important pilgrimage site, the monastery on the eastern shore with its adjoining beer garden is now one of the most important sights on Lake Ammersee. Many tourists set off on hiking tours from here to explore the impressive nature of the Pähler Gorge.
  • Raisting earth station: Construction of the station south of the Ammersee began in 1963. Although they are no longer in operation, the huge parabolic mirrors have become an attraction in the region.
  • Ammersee steam railway: On one of the most beautiful routes in Germany, you can explore the region from Mering to Augsburg on a historic steam locomotive and take lots of souvenir photos.
  • Pilsensee: The idyllic Pilsensee is less well known than its larger neighbours Ammersee and Wörthsee, but is no less attractive. The natural lake is a real insider tip and invites you to relax, swim and fish. The nearby Seefeld Castle is also a great excursion destination.
  • Kurpark Herrsching: The Kurpark in Herrsching is a wonderful place to stroll and offers great views of Lake Ammersee thanks to its lakeside location. Particularly worth seeing is the romantic Kurparkschlösschen, which is a landmark of Herrsching.

Tour tip

Fancy getting to know even more of Bavaria? Then a road trip by camper van through the beautiful south of Germany is just the right programme! One of the most beautiful routes for campers starts in Munich and leads from there through the whole of Bavaria. With the Alps always in view, it takes you to some of the region's most popular highlights: Tegernsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the shadow of the Zugspitze, Neuschwanstein Castle, romantic towns such as Bad Tölz or Füssen and the magical Alpine foothills of the Allgäu. A real dream tour - which you can of course also explore in individual stages. Find out more
