With its beautiful beaches and hidden bays, Umag is one of the most beautiful places to camp by the sea in Croatia. The holiday resort in the north of the Istrian peninsula offers the best conditions for water sports and sunbathing with its enchanting coastal landscape. Fans of naturist culture will also get their money's worth in Umag, as there are several nudist beaches nearby. Campers travelling with the whole family will find numerous exciting attractions for children, including the popular Istralandia water park.

Special features of camping in Umag

Umag is one of the best-known holiday resorts on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia and is located just a few kilometres from the border with Slovenia. This makes the town a popular starting point for many campers on a road trip in Istria along the Croatian Adriatic. Umag is known above all for its many beautiful pebble beaches, which stretch for around 45 kilometres along the rocky west coast of Istria and are among the most beautiful beaches on the peninsula. Many beaches have been awarded the blue flag for excellent water quality. As the beaches usually have shallow access to the water, they are also ideal for children. The best beaches in Umag include the main beach Punta in the district of the same name, the sandy beach Zambratija and the picturesque bay in Laguna Stella Maris. The beach at Kanegra is particularly recommended for nudists. A camping holiday in Umag appeals above all to beach holidaymakers and water sports enthusiasts. Many campsites are located in the immediate vicinity of a beach and often have their own access to the beach. There are also several naturist beaches around Umag and the Naturist Camp Kanegra is an excellent campsite for naturists. Dog owners are usually allowed to bring their four-legged companions to the campsite. Umag also has an official dog beach near the Stella Maris campsite.

Popular campsites in Umag

The campsites in Umag generally offer pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents with electricity and water supply. Guests without motorhomes can usually also rent mobile homes, bungalows or other rental accommodation. In the high season in summer, many campsites offer children's entertainment, water sports and other leisure activities.

Camping Park Umag

One of the largest campsites in Umag and perfect for family camping thanks to children's entertainment, a beautiful natural beach and an outdoor pool complex with a pirate ship. The modern sanitary facilities offer hot showers. Numerous shops, restaurants and bars are spread across the extensive meadow area. There is a separate area for dogs. It can get quite full here in the high season, so we recommend booking well in advance.

Camping Savudrija

The Savudrija campsite is in a fantastic location by the oldest lighthouse on the Adriatic and is one of the best places in Umag to enjoy the view of the sunset. The spacious pitches are located on meadows in a sparse pine forest. The beach is only a few metres away. All in all, a beautiful, very natural campsite.

Camping Stella Maris

With 16 tennis courts in the immediate vicinity, courts for beach volleyball and beach handball and a wide range of water sports, this campsite is perfect for tennis fans and water lovers. The pitches are very spacious and the newly built pool invites you to splash around and relax.

Camping Pineta

Beautifully situated campsite by the water with a wonderful view of the offshore islands and within walking distance of the towns of Fazana and Peroje. The campsite also has a small but well-stocked shop for everyday necessities. Dogs are allowed on the campsite in both high and low season. Towards the end of August and beginning of September, it can get very noisy at night due to festivals on the site.

Camping Finida

Small, clean and tidy campsite in a great location on a beautiful bay. Just right for anyone looking for a relaxed campsite without an entertainment programme or pool area. The pitches on the grass pitches are mainly in the shade of pine trees and German is spoken at reception.

Favourite places in the region

Of course, you can spend your entire holiday in Umag on one of the many beautiful beaches. But it's worth exploring the surrounding area. There are many charming villages along the Umag Riviera that are ideal for a day trip. The fishing village of Savudrija on the cape of the same name is the westernmost point of Istria and exudes a lot of typical Istrian flair. Further south is the pretty town of Porec, which is often compared to Venice. Rovinj, the "Pearl of the Adriatic", surrounded by picturesque pine forests, is also a wonderful destination for an excursion.

Savudrija

The fishing village of Savudrija, situated on a headland, marks the westernmost point of Croatia and lies just before the border with Slovenia. Even today, the population of this picturesque village still lives from fishing. The catch can be savoured in one of the many excellent restaurants. Together with the fantastic beaches, Savudrija is a popular holiday destination for sun worshippers and foodies. The most famous sight is the lighthouse, which is the oldest lighthouse in Croatia.

Poreč

The harbour town of Poreč is one of the largest and most famous holiday resorts in Istria. Situated in a fantastic location on a peninsula, the town has something for everyone. Those interested in culture can stroll through the pretty alleyways of the old town and explore sights such as the famous Euphrasian Basilica, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. But beach fans also get their money's worth in Poreč. Probably no other town in Croatia has so many beaches that have been awarded the blue flag,

Rovinj

Rovinj is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in Istria. With its offshore islands, the beautiful waterfront promenade and the many magnificent buildings of the historic old town, the harbour town is definitely worth a visit. The landmark of Rovinj is the Church of St. Euphemia with its 60 metre high church tower, which makes a wonderful photo opportunity. Rovinj also has numerous beautiful beaches with the typical crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic. Nature lovers should visit the nearby Rimski Fjord - the deep karst valley between wooded slopes is probably the most beautiful fjord in Croatia.

Sights and excursion destinations

The coastal town of Umag is best known for its beautiful old town centre, Roman heritage and Gothic and Renaissance houses. When visiting Umag, these highlights should not be missing from the programme: - Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary: The church by Filippo Dongeti from 1757 with its frescoes is a jewel of the old town of Umag. Next to it, the bell tower of St. Pellegrinus rises into the sky. - Umag Town Museum: The exhibition is full of archaeological treasures and finds from Roman times. - Historic old town: The medieval heart of Umag invites you to stroll through the winding alleyways with a rich past. - Savudrija lighthouse: 36 metres high, it is the oldest active lighthouse in the country and is shrouded in mystery - ACI Marina Umag: The impressive harbour with 475 moorings is home to luxury yachts up to 40 metres long.

Tour tip

Thanks to its location in the north of the peninsula, Umag is the perfect starting point for a motorhome tour through Istria. Depending on how much you want to see, you should allow at least two to three weeks. A popular route leads - always along the sea - via the coastal towns of Poreč and Rovinj to Pulag in the south of Istria. From there, you can cycle back north along the east coast and take the ferry to Cres at the ferry harbour in Brestova. The tour can also be perfectly combined with a round trip through the islands of Kvarner Bay. Here is our travel report on this tour.

Insider tip

Here's another tip from our colleague Winnie (Marketing): For families with children, Aquapark Istralandia is a great destination for a day trip that is easy to reach from Umag. The water park near Novigrad is only a 20-minute drive from Umag and is one of the largest water amusement parks in Croatia. The highlight is the 2500 m2 wave pool, which is one of the largest in the Mediterranean.

Spectacular slides and attractions such as Free Fall, Space Rocket and Black Kamikaze provide thrills. To ensure that young and old alike feel at home, there are also separate pools with water games for younger guests. Afterwards, you can relax in the hydromassage pool.
