Romantic fairytale castles, snow-covered Alpine panoramas in winter and an enchanting lake landscape await visitors when camping in Füssen and the surrounding area. The highest town in Bavaria in the beautiful Ostallgäu region is the perfect starting point for holidaymakers who want to be close to nature. While the idyllic River Lech flows through the town and invites you to take leisurely walks along the river, bathing enthusiasts can jump straight into the cool water just outside the town gates.

Special features of camping in Füssen

Enjoy peace and freedom and be inspired by the varied landscape - a holiday in Füssen is particularly good for this. In addition to cultural highlights in the town in the Allgäu, which is interesting for art connoisseurs and those interested in culture with its museums and sights, Füssen and its surroundings are attractive because of the variety of leisure activities on offer.

Families travelling with a caravan or motorhome can enjoy the picturesque lake landscape up close: in addition to Lake Forggensee, Lake Weißensee in the west and Lake Alatsee, Obersee and Mittersee provide the ideal backdrop for a swimming holiday, where small children can splash around on the shores for hours.

For many guests, getting active is just as much a part of a camping holiday: extensive bike tours across the slightly hilly landscape, along the Eschacher Weiher pond or the Wiedemannweiher pond promise beautiful routes with idyllic picnic opportunities. Extensive hiking routes fulfil the ambitions of sporty holidaymakers.

Thanks to Füssen's location close to the Tyrolean border and with a unique Alpine panorama, hikers also get their money's worth and test their stamina when crossing the Alps. However, the mountains are not only suitable for a camping holiday in Füssen in summer: If you want to experience the landscape immersed in snow in winter, come to the Ostallgäu in the colder months. Guests can experience the mountain world up close on long cross-country ski trails and snowshoe hikes and end the day in a cosy candlelit caravan in the evening.

Top sights

The town of Füssen has a long history dating back to Roman times. Today, visitors can still discover many fountains and the well-preserved town wall in the old town as well as the former monastery of St Mang with its famous St Anna Chapel from the 9th century. The magnificent building houses the Museum of the City of Füssen with interesting exhibitions on the history of the Allgäu.

A modern relic in the town is the Füssen Festival Theatre. The music theatre is romantically situated on the shores of Lake Forggensee and puts on top-class musicals. When visitors step out onto the terrace, their gaze wanders to the magnificent Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most enchanting sights in the Füssen region, surrounded by forest and mountains. The festival theatre and castle pay homage to King Ludwig II, who grew up here and gave the region a magical splendour with his fairytale building. The birthplace of the blue-blooded king can be seen across the Marienbrücke bridge: Hohenschwangau Castle.

The Lech also makes the town of Füssen scenically attractive: the river rises in the Lechquellengebirge mountains and later flows into the Danube at Rain. On the southern outskirts of Füssen and close to the border with Tyrol, it becomes the Lech Falls, then meanders through the town centre until it flows through the Forggensee lake in the north-eastern part of the town and is on the list of Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes.

Activities and excursions

Hiking and cycling tours

The town of Füssen borders Austria to the south and the Romantic Road, the German Alpine Road and the Via Claudia Augusta to the south-west of Bavaria, which offer excursion opportunities and well-developed networks of paths for cyclists and hikers. If you want to set off from the campsite on the Allgäu long-distance cycle route, you can explore the entire Allgäu in stages and return to Füssen by train, for example. Hikers can not only enjoy the fresh air, but also get to know the tree flora from above - at a height of 20 m - at the Füssen Forest Adventure Centre on the treetop path.

Activity programme in winter

Visitors to the campsite in Füssen can also enjoy a varied activity programme in winter, ranging from snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on up to 300 km of trails to a fast ride on the many natural toboggan runs. When the region's lakes freeze over, locals and holidaymakers meet up for curling or ice hockey in Füssen. Water lovers who can't get enough of the water and want to splash around even in the cold season can enjoy hours of fun at the swimming pool in Füssen. A horse-drawn sleigh ride in the snow-covered countryside is a more relaxing experience. Treat yourself to a relaxing wellness programme in the thermal baths near Füssen: The treatments at the Königliche Kristall-Therme in Schwangau ensure an all-round feeling of well-being for body and soul during your stay in Füssen.

events

February

  • Bonfire in Schwangau: On 18 February, the winter season is driven out of the region in the East Allgäu according to Alemannic custom. As a signal, a stuffed witch is burnt in the blazing flames of the high bonfire.
  • Carnival: In the second month of the year, the fools are also out and about in Füssen and the surrounding area: locals and holidaymakers dress up in their best costumes at the children's party, the carnival ball or on Weiberfastnacht.

July

  • Füssen Town Olympics: Every year, this sporting event at the beginning of July attracts many fans and participants as they compete in various disciplines in individual or team competitions. Young guests aged 6 and over can take part in the Children's and Youth Olympics.
  • Füssen Marathon: The beautiful natural landscape of lakes, fairytale-like magnificent buildings and wide alpine meadows is the inspiration for this 42 km sporting event at the end of June, which lives up to its name as the Royal Castles Romantic Run.

Gastronomy

As the region is a mixture of Swabian, Württemberg and Bavarian influences, three ingredients are a must in Allgäu cuisine - flour, eggs and milk. In the past, as today, the region's speciality is still prepared by hand: Kasspatzen are rarely missing from the menu in mountain huts and lakeside restaurants. With savoury mountain cheese on top and fried onions mixed in, this traditional dish is a delicacy for young guests, vegetarians and pasta lovers. Variations of this savoury pasta dish come in the form of cabbage and spinach spaetzle or cabbage fritters.

If you are very hungry and would like a family dish, we recommend the Stopfer, a traditional dish skilfully prepared from roux, lard and eggs. Even if you're not very hungry, it's hard to resist the cakes, tarts, pies and other pastries. The bakeries offer a wide range of products and the restaurants serve apple cakes with vanilla ice cream.

If you come camping in Füssen during the Advent season, you will witness the traditional Springerle baking, which has been in use since the 17th century. Those with a sweet tooth can try the aniseed-spiced egg-dough biscuits, which have different names. These baked pictures are almost too good to eat, with embossed motifs on the front that appeal to the eye as well as the culinary art and are extremely popular as small gifts.

Weather

The weather in Füssen in the Ostallgäu region can be described as moderate: no hot summers and rarely severe winters, so holidays are possible all year round. In the months of June to August, the thermometer in the town of Füssen and the surrounding area climbs to a maximum of 25°C. Visitors can expect the most sunny days in July, although there are also a relatively high percentage of rainy days.

In the lake region, the water temperatures hardly climb above 20°C even in summer, which makes for pleasant refreshment. If you come camping in Füssen in winter, you will experience average temperatures of -1.5°C in snow and ice.
