Camping Thüringer Wald
Camping Thüringer Wald

Hiking, following in the footsteps of historical personalities, cycling, succumbing to the magic of charming half-timbered buildings, marvelling at art treasures: camping in Thuringia is full of incomparable experiences in a fascinating natural and cultural landscape. Thanks to its abundance of forests, the Free State is known as the green heart of Germany. Over 400 castles and palaces can be discovered here, the most famous of which is probably Wartburg Castle in Eisenach. The Thuringian Sea with the Bleiloch and Hohenwarte reservoirs is an Eldorado for water sports enthusiasts.

Special features of camping in Thuringia

The campsites in Thuringia provide space for enjoying nature. Most of the campsites in the central German state are located by the Saale reservoirs and along the Saale cycle path. Hiking enthusiasts are drawn to the Slate Mountains and the Thuringian Forest, where various camping options await around the famous Rennsteig high-altitude trail. In the Rhön, also known as the land of faraway places, there are also pitches for caravans and motorhomes.

A feeling of primeval forest awaits you when camping in the Hainich National Park with its ancient beech forests, treetop path and wild cat village. The wide valleys and rolling hills in the Altenburger Land and Vogtland regions also exude charm. No less enticing are the campsites in the north of Thuringia, where the Kyffhäuser monument and the historic Hanseatic town of Nordhausen beckon. Erfurt and Weimar are also visitor magnets with campsites.

Campsites in Thuringia

There is a large selection of campsites in the state that are ideal for a holiday. The spectrum ranges from nature-loving campsites to optimally equipped sites for caravanning with a high entertainment factor.

Camping Paulfeld

Surrounded by beautiful woodland and with a small pond nearby, Camping Paul is a great place to spend your camping holiday in Thuringia. The bathing area with its own sunbathing lawn is popular with guests in the summer months. Bicycle hire, a shop and a sauna provide excellent service at Camping Paulfeld. Thanks to the cross-country ski trails and the countless activities in the cold season, Camping Paulfeld is also run as a winter campsite.

Hohenfelden reservoir campsite

The Stausee Hohenfelden campsite is a true oasis of well-being with a wide range of leisure activities, especially in the summer months. The lake itself invites you to swim, of course, but games on the shore such as beach volleyball or sunbathing are also high on the wish list of guests in Hohenfelden. The boat and bike hire service allows campers to explore the region on their own by water or on land. The Hohenfelden reservoir campsite is ideal for excursions to the neighbouring cities of Erfurt, Weimar or Jena.

Camping Georgenthal

Camping Georgenthal is a small site with 35 pitches for guests. The service for motorhomes, well-kept sanitary facilities and a shop selling drinks are a matter of course at Camping Georgenthal. The residential town of Gotha, the Bach town of Arnstadt and Ohrdruf are within easy reach of the site.

Oberhof Camping

Oberhof Camping is appreciated for its exposed location and its year-round opening hours. In January, a real highlight awaits all winter sports enthusiasts with the biathlon. Of course, campers in Oberhof can venture onto the cross-country ski trails themselves.

Destinations in Thuringia

Many beautiful places are within easy reach of the campsites. In addition to the well-known towns or the Rennsteig, Bad Liebenstein, Piesau as a district of Neuhaus am Rennweg, Deesbach, Spechtsbrunn and many other charming villages are also worth a visit.

Best time to visit

The weather in Thuringia is characterised by a temperate climate with continental influences. It is drier and milder in the flat north than in the higher altitudes of the Thuringian Forest in the south. The Thuringian Basin is even one of the regions with the lowest rainfall in Germany. The months of July and August, with average maximum temperatures of 23 degrees Celsius, are ideal for swimming in Thuringia's lakes and immersing yourself in nature by canoe on the Werra, Unstrut and Saale rivers. Between spring and autumn, it's hiking and cycling season. Thuringia is also perfect for winter camping. In the traditional winter sports resort of Oberhof and the largest and most snow-sure alpine ski area in the state, the Silbersattel ski arena in Steinach, there are numerous pistes, toboggan runs and varied cross-country ski trails.
