Camping in Roermond is a dream for anyone who likes to spend their holiday by the water. The huge lake district of the Meuse Lakes in the province of Limburg is a true Eldorado for water sports enthusiasts. Roermond is also the secret shopping Mecca of the Netherlands. Roermond is the largest city in the Maasplassen region. This huge lake area stretches over 3000 hectares and is the largest contiguous water sports area in the Dutch inland. Roermond is therefore an Eldorado for water sports enthusiasts, boat owners and sun worshippers.
Most of the campsites in Roermond are located on one of the many small and large lakes of the Maasplassen and are right on the water. Holidaymakers can swim, sail, windsurf, jet ski, use the boat hire and numerous water sports schools or relax on one of the beautiful beaches. At Lake Oolderplas in the south-west of the region, there is even a nudist beach, Isabellagriend, for those who enjoy free body culture.
In addition to its unique natural surroundings, the old Hanseatic city of Roermond is particularly well known for its shopping opportunities. Roermond is very easy to reach for campers from Germany, as the Dutch municipality is only 15 kilometres from the border with North Rhine-Westphalia. From Hamburg, it is around 450 km to the destination, with holidaymakers taking the A1 towards Münster.
Campers from the east of Germany should expect a longer route. From Dresden, you should allow around 640 km for the journey. On this route, holidaymakers can take the A38 or A4 to Kassel and then take the A44 via Dortmund. Halfway along the route, it is worth stopping off at the Fulda floodplain nature reserve, which is home to the Buga Lake. The extensive landscape oasis is the ideal place to stretch your legs in peace and quiet. It takes around 680 kilometres from Munich to Roermond. The quickest route is via Nuremberg and Cologne. This route is mainly dominated by the A9 and A3 motorways. Please note: The A9 motorway from Munich to Nuremberg is often affected by traffic jams in the peak season. We therefore recommend travelling on the A8 and A61 via Stuttgart, especially at weekends and during school holidays.

You can reach Roermond by ferry and there is a children's entertainment programme for the youngsters.
This quiet and family-friendly campsite on the Asseltse Lakes has its own slipway, making it ideal for water sports enthusiasts or boat owners who want to explore the Maas lakes. There are also wooded areas nearby with many hiking and cycling routes. There are 2 restaurants with a view of the marina near the campsite.
The Hatenboer campsite and marina is just a 10-minute walk from Roermond. The large site has 350 grass pitches for caravans and motorhomes and 430 berths for boats. The sanitary facilities are not up to date, but due to the beautiful location of the site, this is easily overlooked. There are several playgrounds for children and a children's entertainment programme at weekends. Please note: it can get very crowded (and noisy) here in high season.
This small but beautiful campsite is in a fantastic location between the Meuse and the lakes and is perfect for those seeking peace and quiet. Dogs are allowed on the site and there are numerous beautiful walking trails in the neighbourhood.
A huge holiday village that is perfect for families with children thanks to its numerous leisure facilities. There are playgrounds right next to the pitches and an extensive entertainment programme. If the weather is bad, the indoor playgrounds, the indoor swimming pool with outdoor area or the bowling alley provide variety. Mobile homes, lodges, safari tents or chalets are available to rent for those without a motorhome or caravan.
When camping in Roermond, exciting leisure activities are on the programme in addition to the countless water sports. Those interested in culture can go on a Cuypers hike through the municipality or visit the town of Weert, while nature lovers can explore De Meinweg National Park.
The Meuse lakes are the largest contiguous water sports area in the Netherlands. Activities in and around the water are therefore high on the agenda for many holidaymakers. Water sports such as swimming, surfing, diving, rowing and canoeing are very popular when camping in the Maasplassen. Those who wish can also try their hand at more extreme sports such as water skiing, wakeboarding or flyboarding.
If you want to get an idea of the true size of the Maasplassen, you should take a boat trip across the lakes. Many campsites and Roermond itself offer day trips on tour boats. Sailing boats are also an excellent way to explore the lakes. If you don't have your own motorboat or sailing boat, you can easily hire one and perhaps even take a sailing course.
In the Cuypershuis Museum, holidaymakers can learn more about the architect and designer Pierre Cuypers from Roermond. The building was where he lived and worked in the 19th century, and some of his works can be admired here today. For breakfast, there are often syrup waffles and sandwiches with chocolate flakes or aniseed crumble. At lunchtime, snacks such as chips with mayonnaise, mini spring rolls and deep-fried meatballs - known as bitterballen - are usually served. Herring with onions and gherkins is also particularly tasty.
For the Dutch, dinner is the main meal of the day. Our tip: savoury dishes such as stamppot. This stew consists of various vegetables, such as mashed potatoes, and a savoury smoked sausage. Also recommended: the country's hearty pea soup, which is traditionally flavoured with smoked sausage or bockwurst.
