The picturesque harbour town of Isla Cristina has retained its original character over the centuries. As fishing is still one of the most important economic sectors, the harbour is a hive of activity, especially in the morning when the cutters come and go. The town is also famous for its 12 km of sandy beaches, which stretch eastwards to the popular holiday resort of Islantilla. The gently sloping shore and fine sand offer families with children perfect conditions for splashing around and building sandcastles. Active holidaymakers can let off steam on the coast by surfing or stand-up paddleboarding.
Nature lovers will find a true paradise in the Marismas de Isla Cristina National Park. Numerous hiking trails lead through the 2,145-hectare wetland area, which provides a habitat for rare birds. For culture fans, the 40-minute drive to Huelva is worthwhile. One of the landmarks is the statue of Christopher Columbus at the eastern end of the city, where the great navigator once set off on his voyage to India. La Merced Cathedral with its two tall bell towers is also worth a visit.
There are numerous cosy restaurants to choose from in the lively centre of Isla Cristina. The lively harbour is also an excellent place to dine. A special experience is a visit to the fish auction hall, where freshly caught fish is offered in the morning. Seafood is also the main ingredient in many regional specialities, such as the pink flagellated shrimp gamba blanca, tuna with tomato or skate with paprika. The Huelva region is also famous for its delicate jabugo ham. The special flavour is due to the special feeding of the pigs with acorns and fresh herbs. The stews with lamb and chickpeas are also delicious. Most of the main courses are rounded off with high-quality olive oil from the region.
