Mystical volcanic cones, maars and numerous lakes make the landscape of the Eifel on the border with Belgium around Luxembourg unique. Families romp around at the well-kept lidos and cool off in the clear waters. Hikers are drawn to camping by the lake in the Eifel through the national park or along the scenic circular trails around the clear waters. Dog owners can also enjoy a relaxing holiday at the pet-friendly campsites.

Activities and excursions

For hikers, camping by the lake in the Eifel is all about being active in nature. Families like to retreat to the well-tended beaches on hot days.

Swimming fun for young and old

Some lakeside campsites in the Eifel are even located directly on the shore of one of the numerous maars. One of these is the Pulvermaar southeast of Daun. It attracts visitors with a well-maintained natural outdoor pool, where those seeking peace and quiet can relax on a large sunbathing lawn. Families can often be found in the paddling pool or at the boat hire centre. An insider tip for families is the Seepark Zülpich, where there is a water playground, a sandy beach and a giant bouncy cushion.

Hiking on scenic circular trails

The lakes in the Eifel are perfect for exploring on foot thanks to the well-developed network of paths. For example, an 8-kilometre tour leads around Lake Laach. A detour to Maria Laach Monastery is recommended for culture lovers. The six towers of the monastery church can be seen from afar. The circular hiking trail around Lake Kronenburg is also 8 kilometres long. The starting point is Kronenburg with its medieval centre. On the way, you will pass the 18 metre high dam wall and dense forests.

Cycling around the Rursee

If you like cycling, you should choose the Rursee as your camping destination. The route around the lake is 28 kilometres long and takes a leisurely 3 hours. Stops can be made at the historic farms and the Eschauel bathing beach. Equipped with a picnic basket and swimming gear, you can also enjoy a longer break here with the whole family. The view of the 500 metre-high Kermeter, which cyclists pass right by, is also fantastic. The special thing about the Rursee is its shape, which is more like a meandering river.

Events

Multifaceted events for the whole family round off the holiday programme in the Eifel.

June - July

  • Classical music on the volcano: The Forum Daun, Daun Castle Hill and the lake stage on the Gemünden maar are the venues for musical delicacies at the Classical Music Festival on the Volcano from mid-June to mid-July. A special performance for children is also on the programme every year.

July

  • Ruhrsee on fire: A play paradise for children, 60 market stalls and numerous live concerts attract guests to the Ruhrsee in Flames festival every year. The spectacular giant fireworks display on Saturday evening is also very popular.

October

  • Eifelpark Autumn Festival: At the beginning of October, there is an extensive programme of events as part of the autumn festival in the wildlife and leisure park, including children's concerts, lantern making and an autumn scavenger hunt.
