That's why you should camp by the lake:

  • Water sports with canoeing and boating
  • Experience fishing from the shore or by boat
  • Swimming fun on idyllic beaches and natural beaches
  • Child and family-friendly offers

Camping by the lake is one of the most beautiful and popular forms of camping. In this country, but also in other European countries, there are beautiful and idyllic campsites right on the shores of lakes. Campers have the opportunity to take advantage of the water sports facilities or pursue the hobby of fishing. Many lakes offer bathing facilities, fine sandy beaches and sunbathing lawns in the shade or sun. Additional offers such as boat or canoe hire add to the leisure fun at the campsites.

Camping by the lake is one of the best ways to spend a camping holiday. This little break by the water is particularly popular with families with children. The children splash around in the cool water with new-found friends while the adults soak up the sun. Active holidaymakers and water sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth: canoeing, kayaking or pedal boating offer unimagined views of the water. Beautiful campsites by the lake can be found both in Germany and in neighbouring countries.

Special features of camping by the lake

Many holidaymakers first think of Bavaria when they think of camping by a lake. Here you will find some of the most famous lakes in Germany, e.g. Lake Chiemsee, Lake Constance, Lake Tegernsee or the large Brombachsee. The range of campsites in Bavaria is excellent and everyone is guaranteed to find a beautiful pitch by the water. However, it is also worth looking across the border, for example to Austria: Lake Ossiach in the south of the country has a particularly pleasant water temperature and attracts bathing fans and families in particular. Campers will find one of the largest contiguous lake landscapes in Europe in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Germany. In addition to spectacular nature in the Müritz National Park, the region boasts impressive buildings and numerous castles. In addition to those interested in culture, many boaters, anglers, water hikers and kayakers can be found here. Neighbouring Brandenburg is also known for its beautiful lakeside campsites, many of which are in idyllic locations in the forest - where campers can enjoy pure nature. Of course, Switzerland and northern Italy should not go unmentioned. Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda are just two of the most popular bodies of water in this region, surrounded by imposing mountains and idyllic scenery. Many campsites have their own sunbathing lawns, sandy or pebble beaches that invite you to sunbathe and offer breathtaking views of the natural scenery. Mediterranean towns such as Locarno, Stresa and Cannobio provide cultural variety.

Popular campsites by the lake

The following campsites by the lake in Germany are among the most popular campsites at PiNCAMP. They impress with comfortable facilities, clean sanitary facilities and a wide range of leisure activities. In addition to pitches for caravans and motorhomes, there are often also tent pitches and rental accommodation or mobile homes. Of course, the most important thing should not be missing: A beautiful bathing beach.

Pilsensee campsite

The popular campsite at Pilsensee is just 40 kilometres from Munich. The spacious pitches right by the lake promise relaxing hours by the water. The leisure facilities are also impressive: SUP courses are offered, among other things. There is also a boat hire service on site.

Waging am See beach campsite

The beach campsite on Lake Waging is the perfect holiday spot for families. The huge leisure programme includes sailing courses, entertainment for children and numerous sports activities. There is also a dog training area, boat hire and bike hire. The campsite also has a large lido with direct access to the lake.

Allensbach campsite on Lake Constance

Situated on the northern shore of Lake Constance and directly on the famous Lake Constance cycle path, Allensbach campsite is one of the most beautiful holiday resorts in the region. There is a large sandy beach close to the campsite, which is perfect for families with small children. The Allensbach Wildlife and Leisure Park is a worthwhile excursion destination within walking distance.

Senftenberger See family park

The popular Senftenberger See family park is a true camping paradise in the Lusatian Lakeland. The multi-award-winning site offers great pitches on the lakeshore, a beautiful sandy beach and a wide range of leisure activities for guests of all ages. Cycling tours in the beautiful lake landscape are particularly popular - guided tours are offered at the site.

Terrassencamping Sandbank

Terrassencamping Sandbank is one of the most popular campsites on Lake Titisee in the Black Forest. With the view, it's no wonder: almost every pitch offers a unique view of Lake Titisee and the wooded slopes of the Upper Black Forest. There is also a beautiful beach and exciting activities for the whole family - you won't want to leave this campsite.

Favourite places to camp by the lake

Where are the most beautiful pitches and the best climate for a relaxing camping holiday by the lake? This question is not so easy to answer. After all, there are hundreds of beautiful lakes in Europe. In Germany, Lake Constance is undoubtedly one of the top destinations for campers who want to spend their holiday by the water. In Austria, Lake Wörthersee is extremely popular, mainly due to the warm temperatures, which make it one of the warmest swimming lakes in the country. If you want to go even further south, Lake Garda in northern Italy is the perfect holiday paradise between high mountains and a Mediterranean ambience.

Lake Constance

Lake Constance is the largest lake in Germany and is located in the border triangle between Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Thanks to its mild climate and the numerous beautiful towns on its shores, it is one of the most popular destinations for camping by the lake in Germany. The choice of campsites on Lake Constance is vast. We particularly recommend the ADAC tips Park-Camping Lindau am See and the beautifully situated Klausenhorn campsite.

Lake Wörthersee

Lake Wörthersee is the largest lake in Carinthia and is one of the most popular lakes in Austria for holidaymakers. Lake Wörthersee is perfect for a swimming holiday: In summer, the water reaches an average temperature of 25° C - almost like in a bathtub. Camping Klagenfurt am Wörthersee and Camping Village Wörthersee are two of the most popular campsites on offer from PiNCAMP and are highly recommended.

Lake Garda

Lake Garda is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy. The mixture of high mountains, marvellous nature and the lively towns on the shores of the deep blue lake is simply breathtaking. It is also a particularly good camping destination for families, as it is home to some of the largest amusement parks in Italy. Camping tips on Lake Garda include La Rocca Camp and Fornella Camping & Wellness Family Resort.

Top tips for camping by the lake

  • A holiday by the lake is definitely a good opportunity to try out new sports: If you've never been fishing before, you can take a fishing course for beginners at many campsites, such as Havelberge Camping Park.
  • Many lakes offer windsurfing, kitesurfing, jet skiing, sailing and other action-packed sports. These are great attractions for holidaymakers. However, they can be dangerous for children. Special care must be taken at such places, for example on Lake Garda.
  • Dogs are often, but not always, welcome on campsites by the lake. There are sometimes seasonal restrictions. It is best to choose a dog-friendly campsite that also has special offers for your beloved four-legged friends.
  • Pitches for caravans or motorhomes right by the lake are a dream for most campers. For families with children or holidaymakers with dogs, however, the focus should be on shady pitches. Alternatively, you can rent accommodation or mobile homes by the lake.
  • A swimming pool or water park on the campsite will make your holiday even more enjoyable and exciting. Such features provide a change from swimming in the lake and often offer great play opportunities - such as slides or current channels - for children.

Tour tip

We have already mentioned Lake Garda as a particularly beautiful destination for a camping holiday by the lake. If you want to savour everything this unique body of water has to offer, the best thing to do is to take a round trip around the lake in a motorhome. The tour takes in all the well-known towns on the lake, including picturesque Lazise, the water sports paradise of Torbole and idyllic Limone on the quiet western shore. In principle, you can start at any point. We recommend at least 5 days for the entire tour.
