Hiking in the Moselle valley is fun for the whole family on exciting adventure trails. When camping with children on the Moselle, active holidaymakers can also enjoy the predominantly flat Moselle cycle path. An extended cycle tour can be ideally combined with a boat trip. Exciting leisure parks and open-air museums are among the favourite excursion destinations in the region.

Top tips

  • As the Moselle Valley is one of the warmest regions in Central Europe, it is particularly important to ensure that you wear appropriate sun protection during the warmer months of the year. But you should also pack a rain jacket all year round.
  • Water lovers are best advised to choose a family campsite directly on the Moselle. In addition to well-maintained bathing beaches along the river, there are also swimming pools to cool off in.
  • If you want to pedal hard when camping with children on the Moselle, you don't necessarily have to take bicycles with you. It is best to book a campsite with bike hire, where bikes for adults and children as well as safe child seats are available for hire.
  • The Moselle valley is one of the most popular wine regions in Germany. So where better to sleep than in a wooden barrel? The accommodation is ideal for families who like to have a solid roof over their heads and prefer to leave their tent and equipment at home. The mobile homes offer even more space with a fully equipped kitchen, separate living and sleeping areas and a private bathroom. It should be clarified at the time of booking whether bed linen and towels need to be brought along.

Activities and excursions

Family-friendly cycling and hiking trails as well as exciting excursion destinations inspire families in the Moselle Valley.

Discover the Moselle valley actively

Active families prefer to discover the fascinating holiday region by bike or on foot. The 311 km long Moselle cycle path from Metz in France to Koblenz invites you to go on extensive tours. The 23 km route from Bernkastel-Kues to Traben-Trarbach, for example, is very popular. Idyllic wine villages such as Kindel and Erden invite you to take a break along the way. The return journey is by boat. Follow the trail of nature on the 8-kilometre themed trail in Lösnich. Accompanied by the mascot, Lotta the snail, families solve an exciting quiz about nature together.

Excursion destinations for the whole family

Fun is guaranteed at Klotten Wildlife and Leisure Park. On 30,000 square metres, trampolines, the Zum Rittersturz white water ride and giant slides provide plenty of action. Things are quieter in the wildlife park, where families can admire ibex, mountain goats and fallow deer up close. The Roscheider Hof open-air museum in Konz combines history with modernity. While visitors tour the centuries-old farmstead, they can conveniently call up interesting facts about the ethnological exhibition on their smartphone. The information is presented in an exciting way for the little ones in the Kids Tour app.

Events

Rustling folk and wine festivals bring guests closer to the traditions of the picturesque Moselle region.

May

  • Ehrenbreitstein Fortress History Festival: families can immerse themselves in history at the medieval market and the Celtic craft village. Visitors are amazed by the detailed costumes and customs from the age of chivalry.

June

  • Trier Folk Festival: Ten days of celebrations in the fairgrounds of Germany's oldest city. Numerous rides provide thrills. A tip for visitors with children is the family day: on Wednesday, children can enjoy the attractions at reduced prices.

August - September

  • Wine festival on the Middle Moselle: In Bernkastel-Kues, the traditional wine festival attracts locals and guests at the end of August or beginning of September. The amusement park and the arts and crafts market are a popular meeting place for families. The giant fireworks display is also legendary.
