In the south-east of Upper Bavaria, Berchtesgadener Land stretches from the gentle hills of the Rupertiwinkel in the north to the high alpine mountain landscapes on the border with Austria. In addition to the traditional spa town of Bad Reichenhall, the region is also home to Germany's only Alpine National Park. Its rich flora and fauna can be explored on ranger tours. Berchtesgadener Land is one of the most beautiful places in Germany to spend a camping holiday in the mountains. The district in south-east Bavaria offers fantastic Alpine landscapes with some of the most famous peaks in the Eastern Alps, including the famous Watzmann. Active holidaymakers in particular will find the hiking trails, mountain bike routes and via ferratas ideal. In winter, six fantastic ski resorts beckon. And for those who simply want to relax, the idyllic Königssee is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in Bavaria.

Special features of camping in Berchtesgadener Land

The idyllic landscape and the fantastic mountain panoramas with the mighty Alpine peaks make Berchtesgadener Land the ideal holiday destination for nature lovers. The campsites in Schönau on the northern shore of Lake Königssee are ideal for water lovers. Take a rowing boat along the picturesque shore. Hardy holidaymakers can also take a dip in the cool water. Hikes on the Königssee footpath or the famous Malerwinkel circular trail start directly in front of the campsites. The Berchtesgadener Land region is also very popular with families. The campsites offer playgrounds and a wide range of leisure activities with many exciting outdoor activities. The summer toboggan run on the Obersalzberg promises speedy descents. There are around 250 kilometres of hiking trails in the Berchtesgaden National Park: perfect for long walks with the whole family - even with four-legged friends. In the cold season, winter sports enthusiasts get their money's worth: the ski areas are easily accessible from Schönau and Ramsau. The longest ski area, with 11 kilometres of excellently groomed pistes, is located in the immediate vicinity of Königssee.

Campsites in the Berchtesgadener Land region

The campsites in Berchtesgadener Land are excellently equipped. In addition to pitches for motorhomes, caravans and tents, there is often also rental accommodation and holiday flats for campers without motorhomes. Dogs are welcome guests on many pitches. Booking is generally recommended all year round, as the pitches are also very popular in winter.

Staufeneck campsite

The Staufeneck campsite in Piding in Rupertiwinkel delights its guests with beautifully situated pitches directly on the banks of the River Saalach. On the edge of a mountain slope, campers immediately have the feeling of being at home in nature. The dog-friendly site has a children's playground for the youngsters, a kiosk for shopping and spa facilities in the surrounding area. The Staufeneck campsite is highly regarded for its special atmosphere.

Camping-Resort Allweglehen

On the edge of the Berchtesgaden National Park, guests at the Allweglehen camping resort can enjoy a marvellous view of the mountain backdrop with the Watzmann massif. Not only the beautifully situated pitches, but also the extensive leisure and wellness facilities with sauna and outdoor pool ensure camping enjoyment. The Allweglehen camping resort is open all year round and is particularly popular with winter sports enthusiasts. They use the nearby ski areas in the Alps or set off on the region's cross-country ski trails

Simonhof campsite

The tranquil and dog-friendly Simonhof campsite is located near Ramsau and delights visitors with its location in the middle of the mountain landscape. Nearby are the outdoor swimming pools in Bischofswiesen and Schönau am Königssee, the Watzmann-Therme, the Rupertustherme, the beautiful town of Bad Reichenhall and the Hochschwarzeck ski area. Campers like to head to the Simonhof campsite for these excursion tips.

Favourite places in the region

The Berchtesgadener Land not only enchants with its beautiful nature and unique Alpine panoramas. The region is also home to numerous beautiful places where you can relax and unwind. The centre of the district is the Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall, which looks back on a long history and is known to many people primarily for its salt production. The small town of Schönau am Königssee is also beautiful and a perfect starting point for hikes in the Berchtesgaden National Park. The idyllic mountaineering village of Ramsau is a particular attraction for nature lovers.

Bad Reichenhall

The Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall used to be an important centre for salt production. Today you can see this in the old salt works, which has been converted into a salt museum. The beautiful old town centre with its magnificent villas and the royal spa gardens in the heart of the town are also well worth a visit. The surrounding area also has a lot to offer: For example, a trip to Bad Reichenhall's local mountain, the Predigtstuhl, on the Predigtstuhlbahn cable car is very popular. This is the oldest cable car in the world still in its original condition.

Schönau am Königssee

The small town of Schönau is the perfect place to explore the area around Lake Königssee. Boat trips by electric boat to the picturesque Bartholomä chapel, behind which the impressive Watzmann east face rises 1,800 metres into the air, are particularly popular. The baroque chapel with its red onion domes is one of the most photographed motifs in Berchtesgaden. We also recommend a visit to the royal hunting lodge, which houses a typical Bavarian restaurant

Ramsau

Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Berchtesgaden, Ramsau is one of the most beautiful places in the region. The village is officially known as the "mountaineering village", as many of the surrounding peaks were first climbed from here, including of course the famous Watzmann. But non-alpinists also get their money's worth in Ramsau: the neighbouring Magic Forest is a wildly romantic mountain forest and a popular excursion destination for families, while the romantic mountain lakes Hintersee and Taubensee invite you to spend relaxing hours by the water.

Sights and excursion tips

Almbachklamm gorge: The Almbachklamm gorge in Marktschellenberg is one of the most impressive natural spectacles in Berchtesgaden. An approximately three kilometre long hiking trail leads through the gorge, and the Sulzer waterfall is particularly beautiful. Magic forest at Hintersee: The magic forest near the mountaineering village of Ramsau is one of the most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria and is an ideal hiking area for families, who can explore the mountain forest on the specially created nature trail. Berchtesgaden National Park: Berchtesgaden National Park is the only Alpine national park in Germany and is another wonderful spot for active holidaymakers. Here, nature is left to its own devices and visitors can observe rare animals such as bearded vultures, golden eagles and chamois on extended hikes. Watzmann-Therme: The Watzmann-Therme in Berchtesgaden promises hours of relaxation in beautiful surroundings. Younger visitors can spend exciting hours in the adventurous water world, while older guests can relax in the sauna area and brine landscape. Church of St. Bartholomä: The beautiful baroque church of St. Bartholomä on the western shore of Lake Königssee is one of the most popular photo motifs in Berchtesgaden and a great destination for a day trip. It is also worth visiting the nearby Archenkanzel viewpoint, which offers fantastic views of Lake Königssee.

Tour tip

If you want to spend a little more time in beautiful Bavaria, you can then explore the region by motorhome. One wonderful route is the German Alpine Road, which leads to some of the most beautiful sights in southern Germany and offers magnificent Alpine panoramas throughout. Germany's oldest holiday road starts directly in Schönau and leads from there to the most popular places in Bavaria: Bernau am Chiemsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bad Tölz and the idyllic Nesselwang in the Allgäu. The tour ends in beautiful Lindau on Lake Constance, where you can relax for a few days. An absolute top tour and highly recommended!
