Borkum is the largest of the East Frisian Islands and a favourite seaside resort for families on the North Sea. The family-friendly campsites are located between the dune landscape, the dykes and the vast sheep meadows. Visitors can explore the island world in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park on guided mudflat hikes and bike tours. A horse-drawn carriage, horse-drawn carriage or steam locomotive will take you through the beautiful countryside and on a walk to the cosy town of Borkum.
The campsites on Borkum are located in the middle of the vast dune landscape and close to the town centre. The excursion destinations can be reached quickly by bike or steam train. There is also a nudist beach on the island for friends of naturism and a beach sauna for wellness enthusiasts. The family- and dog-friendly facilities are extensive. Some even offer stabling and catering for horses, such as the Aggen campsite. Signposted bridle paths lead riders safely through the Wadden Sea National Park.
The Insel-Camping Borkum site, with a total area of 7.7 hectares, has well-kept facilities and is popular with families and guests of all ages. The operators come up with lots of ideas for the guests and organise day trips to the sights. A ride in a real fire engine is also on the programme. The 4-star campsite on Borkum has a playground, children's entertainment with a holiday programme and climbing facilities and a youth tent for older children. In the Mini Klub, the youngest guests and their families can enjoy playing and doing handicrafts. Four-legged friends are also welcome here. The site also has its own restaurant for snacks and refreshments and a grocery shop for everyday needs.
The pitches for caravans and motorhomes are shaded by deciduous trees and the campsite is also extremely dog-friendly. Around a third of all pitches are reserved for permanent campers. Thanks to its location in Hindenburgstrasse, the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and the centre of Borkum can be reached within a few minutes. Insel-Camping is open from mid-March to the end of October. Early booking is highly recommended, especially during the season.
The Aggen camping and tent site in the middle of the meadow and dune landscape in Ostland offers beautiful pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents. In the shade of hedges and deciduous trees, the peace and quiet is particularly appreciated here. The Wadden Sea is within easy walking distance. Bookings at the Aggen camping and tent site are only possible on request. The campsite is open from mid-March to the end of October and is located in the immediate vicinity of the town with its restaurants, bars and discos. Here you can enjoy freshly caught fish and shellfish in the quaint pubs. Small boutiques and cosy cafés can be found in the alleyways and on the market square. Wellness treatments, massages and beauty treatments are also available on Borkum.
Water sports or hiking through the mudflats to the seal banks: Borkum has a lot to offer. Take a steam train across the island or a horse-drawn carriage along the dyke to the lighthouse.
The team of trainers at the Borkum climbing park guides visitors safely to dizzying heights. The popular climbing park is an adventure for the whole family and offers a marvellous view of the region. After donning the appropriate safety equipment and receiving professional instruction, visitors climb through the treetops and across the platforms of the facilities. Longboards are also available for hire and snacks and refreshments are available on site.
On the western edge of the island of Borkum, seals and harbour seals can be observed at close range. On a guided tour, visitors can get very close to the friendly predatory mammals of the North Sea. Many creatures become visible in the sea sand and children and their parents discover wondrous creatures from the sea. During the expert excursion, interesting questions about the animals' way of life are answered. The seal tour is a wonderful experience for the whole family.
The island of Borkum has three lighthouses that can easily be discovered in one day. The small lighthouse is located on a 10 m high dune on the south-west side of the island, while the large lighthouse is located to the west of the town centre. The Düne lighthouse is located on the edge of the town centre. Due to the proximity of the sights, the sightseeing tour is popular with families with children or four-legged friends.
