Borkum is the largest of the East Frisian Islands and a favourite seaside resort for families on the North Sea. The family-friendly campsites are located between the dune landscape, the dykes and the vast sheep meadows. A horse-drawn carriage, horse-drawn carriage or steam locomotive will take you through the beautiful countryside and on a walk to the cosy town of Borkum.

Some even offer stabling and catering for horses, such as the Aggen campsite. Signposted bridle paths lead riders safely through the Wadden Sea National Park.

Top tips

  • Camping with horses is also possible on Borkum. Stabling facilities are available at the horse farms and also at one or two campsites with farm connections. When riding by the sea, it is advisable to ask the local islanders about the tides before the first ride. This will ensure that horse and rider return to the stables with dry feet. Riding equipment can also be hired on site. Guided carriage rides are available for families with or without dogs.
  • A holiday on the island of Borkum offers many leisure activities. Whether kitesurfing, sailing or diving: Water sports enthusiasts can hire their equipment and beginners can take part in training and licenced courses. The surf schools on Borkum offer a wide range of courses. For ambitious beginners, it is advisable to find out about the local programmes and register early.

Photograph the seals on the "High Reef"

On the western edge of the island of Borkum, seals and harbour seals can be observed at close range. On a guided tour, visitors can get very close to the friendly predatory mammals of the North Sea. Many creatures become visible in the sea sand and children and their parents discover wondrous creatures from the sea. During the expert excursion, interesting questions about the animals' way of life are answered. The seal tour is a wonderful experience for the whole family.

Cycle over the dyke to the lighthouses

The island of Borkum has three lighthouses that can easily be discovered in one day. The small lighthouse is located on a 10 m high dune on the south-west side of the island, while the large lighthouse is located to the west of the town centre.
