Camping in the Palatinate is perfect for anyone who wants to combine enjoyment with great nature and a wide range of cultural activities on holiday. Connoisseurs can follow the German Wine Route with its many charming wine villages. Those interested in culture can explore over 500 medieval castles and palaces. The Palatinate is also a true paradise for active holidaymakers: Hikers and cyclists can embark on varied tours through the North Palatinate mountains or the romantic Palatinate Forest. Relax afterwards with a glass of fine wine, Saumagen and other specialities from the regional cuisine.
Located in the south of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Palatinate is one of the most diverse camping regions in Germany. There are campsites for every taste - the offer ranges from simple nature campsites to luxuriously equipped holiday resorts for the whole family. If you are looking forward to relaxing hours in the midst of unspoilt nature, the Nordpfälzer Bergland is the place to stay. The Moosbachtal and Klingbachtal valleys are also very popular with nature-loving campers, while families who appreciate a wide range of leisure activities are most likely to find what they are looking for near the larger communities. In Deidesheim, the spa town of Bad Dürkheim and Ellerstad, for example, there are numerous beautiful campsites. Due to the many cycling and hiking trails, the Palatinate is also very popular with camping guests with dogs. Fortunately, it is not a problem to take your four-legged companion with you on your camping holiday at most campsites. Another big plus: the great location of the campsites. Many sites are located by a natural swimming lake or a river. Perfect in summer if you want to take a quick dip in the cool water. Many hiking trails and cycle paths also lead directly past the campsites - so active holidaymakers can explore the Palatinate's network of over 1300 km of trails with a total of 48 certified hiking trails directly from their caravan. There are also excellent motorhome pitches throughout the state, especially in popular regions such as the German Wine Route.
The campsites in the Palatinate are excellently equipped and, in addition to modern sanitary facilities, often also offer in-house restaurants where guests can sample local specialities such as Saumagen. Overnight stays in rented accommodation, mobile homes and holiday flats are also frequently offered.
The beautiful Clausensee campsite is situated in an idyllic location in the middle of the unspoilt nature of the Palatinate Forest. The highlight of the site is the large bathing lake, which attracts water rats and bathers, especially in the high season. The pitches directly by the lake or the babbling brook are also uniquely beautiful. Dogs are welcome on the site. Thanks to a large adventure playground, the site is also very popular with families.
This cosy, small campsite is located at the foot of the Königsberg in the picturesque Lautertal valley near the small town of Wolfstein. There is a family atmosphere on the site - but there is still no lack of comfort. The sanitary facilities are extremely clean and there is even a dog shower. The new Tiny Houses or the stylishly rustic luxury igloos provide a touch of luxury camping.
The beautiful Neudahner Weiher campsite in the heart of the Palatinate Forest is the perfect place for nature lovers. The pitches are located directly on the lake, surrounded only by nature and densely wooded slopes. The campsite is deliberately aimed at those seeking peace and quiet who don't need an all-round leisure programme to be happy. But with so much marvellous nature, that's not even necessary.
The very well located Sägmühle leisure centre near Trippstadt in the Palatinate Forest biosphere reserve is the ideal place for hikers and connoisseurs. The romantic Karlstal valley is only a few kilometres away and the wine route is only half an hour away. As the campsite is located right next to a bathing lake, it is also very pleasant to stay on site.
The Palatinate is a region of contrasts: The idyllic landscapes range from dense forests and species-rich low mountain ranges to romantic rivers and sun-drenched vineyards. However, the Palatinate is a great place to relax. Cyclists prefer the Rhine plain, which is characterised by a flat floodplain landscape. Those who prefer wooded slopes and mountains for hiking will feel right at home in the North Palatinate Uplands or the Palatinate Forest. Excursions in the Hunsrück or the Southern Eifel are also highly recommended.
With its rolling hills, green meadows and small forests, the Palatinate uplands are one of the most beautiful regions for hiking in the Palatinate. Many of the well-signposted hiking routes lead past former Celtic settlements and castle ruins, which can be visited today. One of the best routes with great views at every turn is the Pfälzer Höhenweg. If you want to get up high, climb the Donnersberg - at 687 metres, the highest elevation in the Palatinate. Families with children also feel at home here. The Glan Valley is particularly popular, with its pretty farms, many playgrounds and a 40-kilometre-long trolley route.
The Palatinate Forest Nature Park also offers an abundance of active recreation through hiking and cycling. The landscape between wooded slopes and romantic river courses offers many attractive excursion destinations, including numerous historical ruins perched on the mountain peaks. The medieval Trifels Castle above the municipality of Annweiler is particularly impressive. Rustic inns invite you to stop for refreshments along the way. Sports enthusiasts should plan a tour through the Wasgau mountain range to the south of the Palatinate Forest, which is ideal for climbing.
The Hunsrück region between the Moselle, Saar and Rhine, which is still undeveloped for tourism, is a real insider tip for a holiday close to nature with the whole family. The nature campsites in the densely wooded low mountain range landscape are the perfect starting point for exploring the region. There are also numerous wonderful hiking trails here, including the Ehrbachklamm dream loop, which is one of the most beautiful routes in the whole of Germany. The Geierlay suspension rope bridge, which hovers over 100 metres above the forests of the Hunsrück and is one of the longest bridges of its kind in Germany, is also impressive. Top 5 sights Speyer Cathedral: As the oldest Romanesque church in the world, the cathedral impresses with an imposing organ, towers over 50 metres high and ornate frescoes. Trifels Imperial Castle: Built in 1081, the hilltop castle fascinates visitors with its historic imperial hall, a chapel oriel and the castle chapel. Hambach Castle: The castle is considered a national monument and symbol of German democracy due to the Hambach Festival held there in 1832. Donnersberg: At an altitude of over 680 metres, hikers can enjoy a fantastic view over the North Palatinate mountains from the Donnersberg. Holiday Park: With its numerous rides, the amusement park near Haßloch is ideal for an exciting family day out.
The famous German Wine Route runs for 85 kilometres through some of the most beautiful corners of the Palatinate. It passes picturesque wine villages, rolling hills and sun-drenched vineyards - it is not for nothing that the route is often referred to as the "Tuscany of Germany". The German Wine Route is of course also very popular with campers, who travel the entire route in a motorhome. They can stay overnight at one of the many campsites, and there are also some special motorhome sites along the route. With its mixture of beautiful landscapes, quaint villages and lots of enjoyment, the German Wine Route is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful campervan routes in the whole of Germany. Here is our detailed travel report on atour from Munich to Bad Dürkheim.
Here's a tip from our colleague Jan (Content): The Palatinate is also ideal for family-friendly excursions, for example to the numerous wildlife parks and zoos. Landau Zoo, which is conveniently located just 5 minutes from the city centre, is particularly beautiful. The Biosphere House in Fischbach also offers exciting insights into the regional animal population. The Sea Life in Speyer is also highly recommended. In the aquarium, visitors of all ages can get to know the colourful inhabitants of the oceans, including turtles, rays and even sharks. Finally, if you would like to teach your children about a conscious approach to nature, plan a trip to the House of Sustainability in the municipality of Johanniskreuz.
