Camping Šobec
Camping Šobec

Slovenia is not called the green attraction for nothing. Holidaymakers will never be bored in this small country between Italy and Croatia. In the numerous caves, some of which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, you can go on family-friendly excursions. The Julian Alps offer leisure activities at any time of year. Slovenia's romantic lakes, which are considered a paradise for campers, are a real insider tip. Situated in the middle of nature, with lots on offer on the doorstep, they delight campers of all ages.

Lake destinations in Slovenia

Lake Bled is probably the most famous lake in Slovenia. Situated in the north-west of the country, its landmark, the small island with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, can be recognised from afar. Many hiking and cycling trails start from the Camping Bled campsite at the south-west end of the lake. A huge trampoline area will delight the little ones. Just 30 kilometres away is another lake surrounded by the Alps, Lake Bohinj.

The Mostnica gorge and the Savica waterfall are not far from Camp Bohinj. The campsite can accommodate 750 visitors. In a romantic atmosphere, you can try out water sports such as kayaking or fishing, hire bikes or go hiking. The campsite also has children's playgrounds and its own stretch of beach. Pets are more than welcome at the campsite. But smaller, less well-known campsites by the lake should not be underestimated either.

At the Menina adventure campsite, for example, 70 kilometres east of the capital Ljubljana, there is nothing you can't do. The purpose-built camping lake offers cooling on hot days. You can also explore the lake in boats that are available for hire or try your hand at stand-up paddling. The campsite also has its own adrenaline park: visitors of all ages can climb through the trees in the high ropes course. The campsite's own wellness area with steam baths and Finnish sauna gives the campsite a very special charm even in cool temperatures.

Activities and excursions

Whether on land or water: campsites by the lake in Slovenia offer numerous activities. Visitors can choose between cultural programmes such as castle tours or adventures such as cave tours. There are also numerous excursions on offer for families. Hikes through Slovenia's unrivalled nature are particularly popular.

Diving and snorkelling in Lake Bled

Holidaymakers can spot carp, pike and zander at depths of up to 36 metres in Lake Bled. In addition to the many different species of fish, there are also underwater plants worth seeing. The diving centre on the shore rents out equipment and also offers guided courses and accompanied dives for beginners.

Expert cave tour in Govic

On the north side of the beautiful Lake Bohinj is the Govic cave and a waterfall of the same name. The waterfall, which only becomes a waterfall after heavy rainfall, is a rare phenomenon. Parts of the huge Govic Cave can be visited by active holidaymakers with professional guides.

The historic castle near Bled

Bled Castle is a great excursion destination, from where you have a fantastic view of Lake Bled and the lido from a height of 130 metres. It is magically situated on the edge of a rock, right on the cliff. In addition to the panoramic view of the island in the lake, the Gothic chapel inside the castle is also fascinating. In a blacksmith's workshop, which is also housed in the castle, metal artefacts such as figurines and candlesticks are still made by the castle blacksmith himself.

Family hiking tours in the Savinja Alps

The Savinja Alps in the region around Varpolje epitomise the harmony of water and forest. In this breathtaking mountain range, expert guides offer family-friendly tours. Children from the age of three can join the hike. The hike takes about two hours through blueberry fields, meadows and forests.

The best events during your camping holiday

Slovenians love to party. Fortunately, the festivities don't just take place in the capital, but are spread throughout the country. Some of the best events can be reached directly from your campsite by the lake in Slovenia.

June

Lent Folklore Festival: mystical sounds, colourful light shows and local delicacies. The region around Maribor is the centre of the Lent Festival. Folklore and theatre groups from all over Slovenia entertain the audience.

September

Traditional cow ball, Kravji Bal: Cultural dances in traditional dress are performed at the annual cow ball in Slovenia around Lake Bohinj. This is accompanied by brass band music.

October

The annual grape harvest: In October, the mayor of Maribor personally harvests the grapes from the oldest vine in Europe. At the same time, the real harvest begins in the vineyards. This is celebrated in the so-called Buschenschänken (wine taverns), inns and public squares.
