Camping on the island of Reichenau is a great way to combine sightseeing around the World Heritage Site with relaxing days on the beaches of Lake Constance. The destination is located just 10 kilometres west of Constance in Untersee and therefore close to the Swiss border. The island is world-famous for its UNESCO-protected monastery complex, which was founded in the 8th century. Today you can visit the medieval abbey and the illuminated books.
The island of Reichenau is particularly exciting for travellers interested in cultural history. From Constance, holidaymakers can reach the island via the Reichenau causeway. There you will find the monastery complex and the medieval castle ruins of Schopflen.
Insel-Camping Sandseele and Camping Willam directly on the island or Camping am See Allensbach and Campinggarten Wahlwies are wonderful facilities for a holiday on the famous recreational lake. They are in great demand, especially in the high season. It is essential to book pitches for motorhomes, caravans or tents in good time.
The facilities are sometimes luxurious and on some pitches holidaymakers can make use of a fully equipped kitchen, order regional dishes in the site's own café or lakeside restaurant and in some places even relax in the whirlpool. Modern and well-equipped sanitary facilities are a matter of course in many places. Many campsites on Reichenau offer bike hire so that you can set off on an excursion into the Lake Constance landscape directly from your accommodation.
The selection of beautiful campsites around Lake Constance is diverse. The differences lie in the details and, of course, in the price. When booking, especially in the high season, each holidaymaker must decide if criteria for relaxing days are really important.
The Sandseele island campsite has a natural bathing beach and idyllic pitches with a view of the recreational lake. In the shade of the trees, campers with their motorhomes and caravans will find a perfect spot to enjoy the view. However, many marvellous pitches are reserved for permanent campers. Thanks to boat and bike hire and the windsurfing/kitesurfing school, entertaining days are guaranteed on the island campsite. Guests appreciate the ambience at the Sandseele campsite and give it very high ratings on Pincamp, the ADAC camping portal.
At Camping Willam, holidaymakers and permanent campers alike share the pitches in the shade of the deciduous trees. The campsite scores points with its countless offers for children under the age of 12, who can spend carefree days here. While they enjoy the outdoor pool, the natural bathing beach or the playground, parents can savour the view from the riverside restaurant and sample culinary delights. The modern sanitary facilities are another plus for the Willam campsite.
Camping am See Allensbach is located directly opposite the island of Reichenau and is a popular destination for campers thanks to its environmentally friendly management. The 120 metre long natural bathing beach directly on the leisure lake is a blessing in warm weather during the high season. The beautiful pitches are located in the shade and close to the shore, so marvellous views are guaranteed. In addition to these, the rental accommodation at Camping am See Allensbach is also much appreciated by guests. Permanent campers tend to be in the minority on the site.
No camping holiday in Reichenau is complete without a visit to the monastery. The complex was founded in the Middle Ages and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the highlights here is the Minster of St Mary and St Mark, which is famous for its Romanesque façade.
It is also worth taking a look at the Church of St Peter and Paul in the Niederzell district. In Oberzell, the church of St George was built in the 9th century, one of the most impressive legacies of the Carolingians and Ottonians on Reichenau. Inside, visitors can admire the elaborate murals depicting the miraculous work of Jesus.
Those travelling to Mittelzell can visit Reichenau Königsegg Castle, which dates back to the 16th century in its current form. In June, the open-air theatre takes place in the castle park. The Reichenau Museum presents interesting information about the past and cultural history of the region in an entertaining way.
The Reichenau lido is the perfect place to relax. Here, holidaymakers can chill out on wicker chairs and take a dip in Lake Constance. The facility is very family-friendly and offers rowing boat hire, for example. Guests can enjoy delicious specialities such as tarte flambée and wood-fired pizza in the lido's restaurant.
Those interested can learn the basics of this sport at the Reichenau sailing school. A trip around the island is a unique opportunity to get to know the nature of the region. Alternatively, visitors can hire smaller boats for rowing.
The large ferries and excursion boats dock in the south of Reichenau Island. From here, passengers travel to Mannenbach and Iznang in Switzerland, for example, or to Constance. The view of the Lake Constance landscape from the boat is particularly impressive.
If you come camping in Reichenau, you can look forward to a varied cuisine that combines Swabian-Alemannic and Swiss traditions. From the southern side of Lake Constance, Röstis have found their way into Reichenau's cuisine. Potatoes are coarsely grated and fried in a pan until crispy. They are served with a sausage or sliced meat.
Due to its proximity to the water, fish is of course also an integral part of the regional cuisine. The famous whitefish, a typical Lake Constance fish, is grilled in Reichenau's restaurants with fresh herbs and served with potatoes or spaetzle as a side dish.
Another delicacy from the region is the tarte flambée Dünnele, which is topped with bacon, onions, potatoes and cheese. For dessert there is a Biberli. These small cakes from the Appenzell region have an intense flavour of honey, almonds and nuts.
Most holidaymakers come to camp in Reichenau between May and October. Then the temperatures are pleasantly warm, averaging between 19°C and 24°C. On some days, the temperatures even rise to 30°C. In April, campers can expect temperatures of around 14°C.
The least rain is expected in September and October. If you want to go swimming while camping on Reichenau, it is best to travel in June, July and August. Lake Constance is then around 16°C to 19°C warm.
