With their morning coffee in hand, travellers gaze out over the glistening lake, watch the heron on the prowl or plan their rollercoaster rides in the theme park. There is a wide range of 4-star campsites in Germany, from comfortable and well-kept pitches in the most idyllic natural landscapes to large campsites near amusement parks and cities.

Destinations

For a camper, home is where their own caravan is parked. Because despite a changing panorama, holidaymakers always have their mobile home with them. A little piece of the living room atmosphere can be experienced on the Baltic Sea as well as on the North Sea, in the Allgäu or in Saxon Switzerland. These are also four of the most popular German regions where camping holidaymakers like to spend their days off. From the depths of Bavaria to the heights of Schleswig-Holstein: 4-star camping in Germany is just as diverse as the camper vans themselves. Those who are enthusiastic about water sports will get their money's worth on the Mecklenburg Lake District as well as on the Baltic Sea coast. The Brandenburg region with its many tranquil rivers and canals is also ideal for a camping holiday. A combination with canoe trips is popular here, while keen hikers might opt for a stay at a campsite in Berchtesgadener Land.

One 4-star campsite in the south of Germany, for example, is Camping-Resort Allweglehen. The domicile is open all year round and welcomes summer and winter campers alike. Dogs are also welcome here. Between Kiel and Lübeck is the Naturpark-Camping Prinzenholz, which offers amenities for water sports enthusiasts and horse riders. Families with children will feel particularly at home in Rust in the Black Forest, where Camping Europa-Park is one of the few campsites within walking distance of the amusement park.

Top tips

  • 4-star camping in Germany with a dog? Nothing stands in the way of this in many regions. The Lüneburg Heath, for example, is perfect for long walks, where dog owners can relax with their four-legged friends afterwards at the Uhlenköper-Camp. Extras such as dog showers and food are usually standard at four-star campsites.
  • The upscale campsites in the 4-star category are aimed not least at wellness holidaymakers and therefore sometimes have steam baths, saunas and soothing massage offers. One option is Camping Stubbenfelde on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom.
  • What does 4-star camping mean? If you decide in favour of the 4-star classification for camping, you are choosing what is defined as a first-class facility with a high level of comfort and very well-maintained quality. Holidaymakers don't have to do without any amenities here, from reception and feel-good sanitary facilities to upscale extras such as pools and sports programmes.

Excursion options during your camping holiday

Thanks to the wide range of camping options and the variety of landscapes, individual holidays in Germany can be varied on the water, on land and in the cities.

Whizz across the sea with the power of the wind

Anyone spending their holiday on the Baltic Sea or North Sea should not miss out on a day at sea. Some campsites on the waterfront have their own jetty and the opportunity to take a dinghy out on the water as an amateur captain. No previous experience is necessary for an organised sailing trip. Anyone interested can come on board and enjoy the fresh sea breeze and the picturesque surrounding landscape for a few hours. The cliffs of Rügen, for example, are even more impressive from the seaside.

The mountain is calling: hikes during your camping holiday

A camping holiday in the south of Germany can also be filled with many active activities. If you are staying in the east of Bavaria, for example, the Goldsteig trail is close by. At 2,000 kilometres in length, this is one of the longest certified hiking trails in Germany and leads through the protected landscape of the Bavarian Forest National Park. But mountains such as the Harz Mountains or the Black Forest are also great destinations for extensive hikes.

From the campsite to excursions into the city

Individual camping holidays can easily be combined with city trips. If you are camping in Brandenburg near Berlin, for example, you can quickly reach the metropolis by public transport. Or how about a whole camping city tour? After a few days in Berlin, you could continue with your mobile home to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg and then on to Bremen, a city well worth seeing. Here, a stroll through the charming Schnoor district with its narrow, winding alleyways full of small shops and cafés is a must.

A selection of great events in Germany

There is always something going on in Germany, the only question is when, what and where. Here is a brief overview of the biggest annual events.

May

  • Hamburg Harbour Birthday: At one of the most traditional harbour festivals in the world, visitors can expect a mile of merchants and entertainment, peppered with show regattas and sports competitions, concerts and plenty of fish sandwiches.

June

  • Kieler Woche: not only a centre of attraction for professional water sports enthusiasts, but also a multi-day maritime festival for all ages.

September-October

  • Oktoberfest: world-famous folk festival in Bavaria's capital Munich.

October
