During the day, campers enjoy spending time with friends or family on a snowshoe hike, skiing or other winter activities, while in the evening they relax around the campfire together. Beautiful hiking trails, cosy get-togethers and some first-class ski resorts in the Alps: winter camping in the Allgäu has many advantages and attracts numerous camping enthusiasts year after year.

The most beautiful destinations in the Allgäu for winter campers

As soon as you arrive in the Allgäu, it becomes clear: campers can expect a dreamlike region. The landscape is characterised by numerous bodies of water, hilly fields and alpine flair. Many campsites are located by one of the numerous lakes, for example the Großer Alpsee near Immenstadt, the Hopfensee or the Forggensee. Even in winter, when you can't go swimming, the view of the icy water framed by snow-covered mountains is fantastic.

Camping Brunnen am Forggensee, for example, impresses with many relaxing amenities for winter guests. It offers an alpine hut-style wellness area with a steam bath, saunas and whirlpool. A panoramic view of the Alps rounds off the offer. Another popular winter campsite in the Allgäu by the lake is the dog-friendly Camping Zeh am See campsite in Waltenhofen, which offers visitors a spacious, flat meadow as well as many child-friendly facilities, such as a petting zoo.

In the Allgäu, ski enthusiasts also like to camp near the large ski areas. The campsites often offer a shuttle bus service. Warming rooms with Wi-Fi and drying rooms for winter clothing are also often part of the facilities. The Oberstdorf campsite, for example, is an excellent choice for winter sports enthusiasts: guests can enjoy a wonderful view of the Oberstdorf ski jump and the mountains.

Top tips

  • If you come camping in the Allgäu for winter sports, you will benefit from numerous first-class ski areas. The Fellhorn-Kanzelwand and Oberjoch Bad Hindelang ski areas are among the most beautiful. Both have 32 kilometres of varied pistes.
  • There are also first-class winter sports offers for families in the Balderschwang ski area and the Schwärzenlifte Eschach ski area. Here there are child-friendly magic carpets for the first lift rides as well as easy slopes that are ideal for beginners who are keen skiers. Ski and snowboard schools with hire facilities are also available on site.
  • Campsites that offer their services in winter are well prepared for the approaching snowfall and ensure first-class comfort for their guests. Regular clearing is just as much a matter of course as frost-proof water and waste water connections. It is not uncommon to be able to set off on a cross-country skiing tour directly from the campsite.

Activities and excursions

It's not just skiers who are drawn to camping in the Allgäu - there are also easier winter sports, such as cross-country skiing. Culture lovers can visit fairytale snow-covered castles in the surrounding area.

Winter atmosphere around the castles in the Allgäu

A horse-drawn sleigh ride against the backdrop of a wintry castle is a very special and popular experience. Those who enjoy walking can take the so-called Wasserleitungsweg, which leads through the beautiful landscape always with a view of the castle. Culture enthusiasts can look forward to exquisite rooms and an insight into the life of the Bavarian King Ludwig II during a visit to the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle. The castle is an idealised representation of a medieval knight's castle and is a great excursion destination for anyone who wants to find out more about the building's origins and life in the Allgäu in the past. Directly opposite is the impressive Hohenschwangau Castle, which enchants visitors with its neo-Gothic style both inside and out. The main building of the castle is now home to an interesting museum, which presents the interior furnishings from the Biedermeier period, among other things. In the centre of the building, the Hall of Kings, you can learn about Max II and Ludwig II.

Winter hiking and winter sports

The diverse Allgäu region attracts visitors with its many hiking routes, such as the famous Lech hiking trail, where holidaymakers follow the tributary of the Danube. An ascent into the Allgäu Alps is rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view of the wintry surroundings. Thanks to the many lakes, ice skaters also get their money's worth in the Allgäu. Some natural lakes, such as the Alpsee near Immenstadt, are open to skaters when the ice reaches a certain thickness. Many campsites also offer winter activities and provide transport with the help of shuttle buses: From cross-country skiing and curling to ice skating and tobogganing, everything is on offer. Guided snowshoe tours are also a great way to enjoy the winter outdoors. One, for example, leads from Bad Hindelang via Tiefenbacher Eck.

Events

From Christmas markets to music events - the Allgäu offers a wide range of events that are fun for the whole family in winter.

January

  • Russian Christmas with the Tsarevich Don Cossacks: The traditional Christmas concert is held at the beginning of January in the parish church of St. Verena in Fischen. The vocal spectrum from bright tenor to sonorous bass is a mystical, profound and contemplative experience.

December

  • Füssen Advent market: The St. Mang monastery in Füssen provides a romantic backdrop. On the second and third weekends of Advent, the inner courtyard is transformed into a land of lights with Christmas stalls.
  • Leutkirch Christmas market: The market square and Gansbühl in Leutkirch are transformed into an idyllic Christmas village during Advent. In addition to wooden huts with mulled wine and handicrafts, there is a supporting programme with music.
