Whether sports enthusiasts, nature lovers, hikers or those interested in culture - the winter campsites in Bavaria offer just the right thing for every type of holidaymaker. Campers can look forward to a region rich in mountains, lush green meadows, extensive forests and crystal-clear lakes. Families with children and dog owners are also drawn to winter camping in Bavaria.

Destinations

Bavaria, the federal state in south-east Germany, is a true paradise for all camping enthusiasts. Many campsites in the region are also open during the cold season and offer ideal conditions for a great holiday. A winter campsite in Bavaria often has a ski bus and a drying room. Some of them are even located next to a ski lift. Cross-country ski trails can also usually be found directly on site. The majority of campsites also offer wellness facilities and the region around the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany, is particularly popular. Here there is a large selection of campsites in prime locations for hikers and skiers. Campers who enjoy leisurely and extended hikes are in exactly the right place in the foothills of the Alps. In Franconian Switzerland, on the other hand, there are exciting routes for climbing fans.

Bavaria also has numerous campsites right next to idyllic lakes. The ADAC recommends a total of almost 40 campsites, many of which have direct access to a natural ice rink in winter. For example, the Camping Brunnen site with a view of the royal castles is extremely popular, while the Alpen-Caravanpark Tennsee on the lake of the same name is also a favourite destination for anyone who enjoys ice skating or simply wants to relax with a wonderful panoramic view of the Alps. Sports enthusiasts who like to have solid ground under their feet can look forward to the numerous hiking trails in the region. Popular routes include the Karwendel Crossing, the Steinbock Tour and the Franconian Mountain Trail.

Top tips

  • Motorhome and caravan drivers should definitely get suitable winter tyres with a tread depth of at least 4-5 millimetres for the vehicle before setting off. Snow chains are also recommended.
  • An awning is definitely an advantage when winter camping in Bavaria. It protects you from snow drifts, but can also be used to store sports equipment and dry clothes. It also prevents damp inside the camping vehicle.
  • Families with children favour the Fellhorn/Kanzelwand and Söllereck ski mountains, among others, as there are many easy to moderately difficult slopes here. If you need a thrill, visit the tranquil town of Oberstdorf in Upper Bavaria and try a descent from the small ski jump in the Erdinger Arena under expert guidance.

Activities and excursions

The state of Bavaria welcomes camping enthusiasts. Adventurous holidaymakers like to head for one of the varied leisure destinations in the surrounding area.

Sporting fun and relaxation

Both snowboarders and skiers will find numerous beautiful slopes and pistes throughout Bavaria that are suitable for beginners and advanced skiers alike. One of the best-known ski areas in the region is definitely the Oberstdorf/Kleinwalsertal ski area, which has both family-friendly and challenging pistes. On the Nebelhorn, sports enthusiasts can enjoy the longest valley run in Germany, while the Sudelfeld ski area is particularly popular alongside the Zugspitze. It is considered the largest of its kind in terms of area and comprises a total of around 32 kilometres of pistes. Families with children also love the free SNUKI-Kinderland with expert supervision, for which no lift ticket is required. All those seeking relaxation who need a little peace and quiet in the midst of the action or those who simply want to treat themselves to some time out will also get their money's worth at the winter campsites in Bavaria. Guests can unwind in the on-site whirlpool or sauna. Spa staff also pamper you with various beauty treatments and massages of all kinds.

Cultural attractions

Art enthusiasts can look forward to many culturally significant cities and excursion destinations. The Bavarian capital of Munich attracts visitors with numerous interesting spots, such as the magnificent Nymphenburg Palace. The city is also home to a large number of art museums, such as the Haus der Kunst or the Pinakothek der Moderne. Other cities in Bavaria also impress with their wealth of art and culture: whether Nuremberg, Augsburg or Regensburg - they are all worth a visit. Caravan and motorhome owners enjoy travelling the Romantic Road, a holiday route that winds its way from Würzburg through picturesque villages and medieval towns - ideal for anyone who prefers to discover the beauty of the Free State on four wheels.
