With its excellent water quality, Lake Maggiore, located on the border between Italy and Switzerland, is perfect for a relaxing beach holiday with the kids. In between, mountains such as Monte Tamaro or Monte Lema invite you to go hiking. A highlight of camping with children on Lake Maggiore is a boat trip to the idyllic Borromean Islands such as Isola Bella, which lives up to its name as a beautiful island.

Top tips

  • Camping holidays for families on Lake Maggiore are particularly popular during the summer months. Child-friendly holiday resorts around the lake, such as Ascona, offer numerous attractions that are very popular with the little ones. For example, the Swiss town on the northern shore offers an adventurous playground right on the water's edge, which delights young guests with a miniature railway and electric cars.
  • Locarno, the third largest city in Ticino, also offers a wide range of leisure activities for families. In addition to animal encounters at the falconry centre and llama trekking, young guests can also enjoy the spectacular lido with slides and children's pool.

Activities and excursions

Whether a beach or active holiday, Lake Maggiore offers a varied holiday programme for the whole family.

Swimming on Lake Maggiore

The picturesque town of Cannero Riviera on the west coast is a popular attraction for families. Thanks to the mild climate, citrus fruits and olives thrive here. Cannero Riviera also boasts a beautiful beach. Thanks to the excellent water quality, the stretch of coast has been awarded the Blue Flag. Playgrounds can also be found right on the shore. Also on the west coast, Verbania at the mouth of the Borromean Gulf boasts small, clean sandy beaches. On the Swiss side, the lido in Ascona is an attractive option. In addition to a 600 metre long beach, there are also beach volleyball courts and playgrounds as well as a 100 metre long water slide.

Hikes in the holiday region

South of Lake Maggiore, the Val Grande National Park offers family-friendly hiking trails. In around one and a half hours, families can learn interesting facts about the regional flora and fauna on the water and deforestation nature trail in Cicogna. An excursion to the Swiss Verszasca Valley above the lake is also worthwhile. A leisurely hike starts in the village of Sonogno at an altitude of 920 metres. From here, the route leads to the picturesque Frodo waterfall. With a walking time of around an hour, the route is also easy to manage with smaller children.

Flying high in spectacular adventure parks

There are several leisure and adventure parks in the immediate vicinity of Lake Maggiore that will make children's hearts beat faster. The AquadventurePark Lake Maggiore, which is located in Baveno against the impressive backdrop of the Monte Rosa massif, delights young and old alike with a climbing facility, exciting water slides and winding cross-bike tracks. The Monte Tamaro adventure park in Rivera, located south of the lake, also provides thrills with a high ropes course, swinging suspension bridges and a fast-paced summer toboggan run.

Events

From spring to autumn, a wide range of events provide variety on Lake Maggiore.

March

  • Camellia exhibition: In March, the annual camellia exhibition attracts thousands of visitors to the idyllic town of Cannero de Riviera on the west coast. Flower lovers of all ages marvel at the colourful sea of blooms.

July - September

  • Stresa Festival: The Stresa Festival in the town of the same name enchants visitors during the summer with classical music and lively jazz sounds. Families with older children can enjoy the finest concerts in the evenings.
