Camping with dog in Denmark

That's why you should camp with dogs in Denmark:

  • Kilometres of natural beaches on the North Sea and Baltic Sea
  • Relaxed walks in the dunes
  • Cycling tours with dogs in the flat interior
  • Charming campsites right behind the coast

Denmark has over 7,000 kilometres of coastline and numerous islands. The unspoilt and extensive beaches are ideal for a camping holiday with dogs. You can always find a quiet spot here and in the low season it's even "cast off" for the four-legged friends. The west coast of Jutland delights with its particularly wide North Sea beaches. But dogs are also welcome guests on Baltic islands such as Funen, Lolland and Bornholm.

Guests can look forward to long walks with their four-legged friend and sightseeing tours through the pet-friendly cities when camping with a dog in Denmark. Active holidaymakers and those seeking peace and quiet like to opt for dog-friendly campsites in Denmark on the coast. Whether on the North Sea or the Baltic Sea, the country boasts kilometres of sandy beaches and a wide range of water sports. Would you like to go camping with your dog in Denmark? A good choice, because our northernmost neighbouring country is not only very pet-friendly, it also has a lot to offer campers with pets. The pitches are spacious and the surrounding countryside offers plenty of opportunities for long walks. Dog washing is rarely a problem thanks to the showers for the four-legged friends. Even when booking mobile homes, dogs are generally allowed.

Enjoy nature in Denmark

On the North Sea and Baltic Sea, one beach follows the next. Hardly any place in Denmark is more than 50 kilometres from the sea. An unbeatable argument for all campers who enjoy swimming or water sports! The Wadden Sea on the North Sea coast in particular is a paradise for dog lovers. There are also large wooded areas that are ideal for long walks with your beloved four-legged friend.

A stress-free camping holiday

The relatively short journey and mild climate also save dogs and their owners a lot of stress. It rains comparatively little, real dog weather is rare. What's more, the Danes are known to be among the happiest people in the world. So why not learn something from their way of life on holiday and take a piece of their happiness home with you.

Special features of camping with a dog in Denmark

In Denmark, however, there are a few special features for dog owners that are stipulated in the Dog Law: From October to March, dogs are allowed to run around on the beach without a lead. The rest of the year, dogs must be kept on a lead. Dogs must generally be kept on a lead in the forest. Exceptions are special dog forests. In these fenced-in, large areas, the four-legged friends can roam freely all year round. The Dog Act also lists breeds that may not be imported into Denmark in the first place or only under considerable conditions. Before travelling to the north, the Danish Dog Act should be studied in detail in order to avoid possible penalties. In the event of a biting incident, the animal may even be euthanised after being examined by an expert.

Dog-friendly campsites

There are numerous campsites in the Danish archipelago where dogs are welcome guests. If campers observe the regulations in the Dogs Act, nothing stands in the way of a relaxing holiday in the north. With the ADAC Campingcard, you can take advantage of several additional offers at many sites at favourable rates.

Henne Strand Camping

Henne Strand Camping on the west coast of Denmark is known for being particularly pet-friendly. After a long walk on the beach or through the nearby Klitplantage nature reserve, four-legged friends can enjoy the dog shower at the campsite. Henne Strand Camping also has an impressive range of activities for families, with many attractions for children and adults. Henne Strand is located just 150 kilometres north of the German border and boasts 16 kilometres of sandy beach. Families love spending the whole day here building sandcastles and splashing around. The coastline has been awarded the Blue Flag for its excellent water quality. Water sports enthusiasts take advantage of the excellent wind conditions for windsurfing or kitesurfing. There are numerous craft businesses in the town centre. Here guests can buy unique amber jewellery or artistic ceramic items.

Camping Gammelbro

With its pitches close to the beach, Camping Gammelbro is an ideal holiday destination for dog owners. Hedges, rows of bushes and individual taller deciduous trees structure the pitches and provide plenty of shade. A public indoor swimming pool in the neighbourhood as a place to go in bad weather and the diving area characterise Camping Gammelbro. In addition to the classic pitches, there are also mobile homes as an alternative for campers without their own vehicle. When booking, however, you should state that you are travelling with a dog.

Drejby Strandcamping

Drejby Strandcamping offers its guests a marvellous view with its pitches for motorhomes and tents. Dog and owner only have to walk a few metres to enjoy the benefits. The pitches are in high demand in both the high and low seasons. Early booking with details of the dog is recommended. Thanks to the extensive facilities, such as a shower for your four-legged friend, washing your dog is no problem at all at Drejby Strandcamping.

Destinations

If you want to spend a carefree holiday with the whole family, Dueodde Family Camping on the island of Bornholm is just the place for you. The pet-friendly campsite in Denmark is surrounded by dense forests and a beautiful beach. Here your four-legged friend can cool off on a lead at any time. Two-legged guests can refresh themselves not only in the sea, but also in the campsite's own indoor swimming pool. The youngest guests can have fun in the playground with its large trampoline. Table tennis tables also provide variety. Animal lovers are welcome to use the bike hire service for extended tours on Bornholm.

Top tips

  • There are several dog forests around Aarhus for walks with your four-legged friend. In Moesgård Forest, for example, there is an area where dogs are allowed to run free. Riis Forest, north of the city centre, is also a popular meeting place with its beautiful old trees. The dog zone here is at the southern end of the forest. In many dog forests there are also bathing facilities for four-legged friends.
  • If you are travelling to Denmark with your family for camping with your dog and would like to go on an excursion, the famous Legoland in Billund is a pet-friendly destination. Dogs on a lead are just as welcome here as they are at the open-air museum Den Gamle By, where pets are allowed in the outdoor area.

Favourite activities and excursions

Charming cities such as Copenhagen and kilometres of sandy beaches such as those on Jutland entice you to go on excursions when camping with your dog in Denmark.

Beach holidays with the family

The island of Bornholm is quite rightly known as the pearl of the Danish Baltic Sea. The sand on the kilometre-long beaches here is particularly fine. There are marvellous bays along the more than 140 km of coastline for swimming. Guests with children, for example, are drawn to Balka Beach near Snogebæk in the south-east of the island. As the water on the shore is particularly shallow, it warms up to pleasant bathing temperatures in summer. Water sports enthusiasts can hire pedal boats or windsurfing equipment. Guests will also find perfect conditions for a carefree holiday with their dog on the west coast of Denmark. The popular holiday resort of Henne Strand north of Esberg, for example, boasts a 30 km long sandy beach. Henne Strand East is a popular destination for a hike with children and dogs. The fascinating Blåbjerg Plantage dune landscape with its metre-high sand mountains can also be found here.

Excursion destinations for culture lovers

For culture lovers who want to combine a beach holiday with sightseeing, a dog-friendly campsite in Denmark is also an excellent starting point. If you want to immerse yourself in the country's history, visit the fascinating open-air museum Den Gamle By in Aarhus. Here, visitors can meet museum staff dressed in traditional costumes, who talk about life in days gone by. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor area. When camping with a dog in Denmark in South Jutland, it's worth travelling to the charming town of Sonderburg. The town is famous, among other things, for the mighty Sonderburg Castle, where King Christian II was once held prisoner. The harbour promenade is a wonderful place for a walk with your four-legged friend to admire the colourful houses by the water.
