Camping with dog in Zeeland

That's why you should camp with dogs in Zeeland:

  • Extensive dog beaches on the North Sea coast of Zeeland
  • Walking opportunities in the flat and rural interior
  • Dog-friendly camping facilities close to the beach
  • Small towns like Middelburg and Vlissingen for a stroll with your dog

In the south-west of the Netherlands, the small and larger islands and peninsulas of the Zeeland region make you want to go on a camping holiday. Many campsites are beautifully situated in the dunes directly behind the sandy beach. Four-legged friends are also welcome on the numerous dog beaches and can run around in the sand and sea to their heart's content. The wide dune belts offer beautiful walks for dogs and humans.

If you want to splash around in the North Sea to your heart's content while camping with your dog in Zeeland, the dog beaches are the right place for you. There are more than 120 designated bathing beaches for four-legged friends to choose from. For a change of pace, take long walks through the fascinating dune landscape by the sea or along the numerous fruit tree plantations inland.

Top tips

  • Hardly any other holiday region on the North Sea has more bathing spots for your four-legged friend than Zeeland. When camping with your dog, it's not far to one of the 120 designated dog beaches. Even the beach at De Banjaard, which has often been recognised as the most beautiful stretch of coastline in the country, has a 500-metre-long exercise area. In summer, four-legged friends are allowed to run around off the lead to their heart's content before 10 am and after 7 pm.
  • The same rule applies to the 2 km long Berkenbosch beach, which is located between the towns of Domburg and Oostkapelle. Holidaymakers can reach the coastal section via the wide dune landscape.

Activities and excursions

As one of the most pet-friendly regions in the Netherlands, Zeeland offers countless dog beaches as well as numerous walking routes, tranquil harbour towns and a wide range of opportunities to relax with your four-legged friend in idyllic natural surroundings.

Explore Zeeland on long walks

A dog-friendly campsite is the perfect starting point for walks through the region. For example, a 12-kilometre route leads along the Veerse Meer over dykes. Fantastic views of the 17 islands and peninsulas of the water are guaranteed. A tour of the popular fruit-growing area in Zuid-Beveland is particularly worthwhile in autumn. Along the Fruit Route, which starts in Kapelle, farmers sell apples and pears and, in summer, raspberries and redcurrants directly from the farm.

Relaxation in idyllic natural landscapes

Away from the hiking trails, numerous picturesque natural areas invite you to explore them with your four-legged friend on a leisurely walk. For example, the Kwade Hoek nature reserve around the golden beach of the same name offers the opportunity to walk over huge sand dunes and breathe in the cool sea air surrounded by a unique landscape. The Het Zwin nature reserve between the municipalities of Cadzand-Bad, Knokke-Heist and Retranchement also invites you and your dog to follow the course of the water to its mouth in the North Sea.

Explore the cities of Zeeland in animal company

The Zeeland holiday region not only boasts beautiful scenery, but also picturesque coastal towns. When on holiday with your dog, it's worth strolling through the tranquil streets of the capital Middelburg. In addition to the imposing town hall in late Gothic style, there are also winding alleyways and pretty canal houses. A particular highlight in the pretty town is the abbey with the Langer Jan tower, which can be visited from the outside. But four-legged friends are also welcome guests in tranquil communities such as Terneuzen, Vlissingen, Zierikzee and Goes.

Events

Music and funfairs attract holidaymakers to Zeeland's interesting events.

May

  • Vrouwenpolderse Dagen: During the Vrouwenpolderse Dagen around Ascension Day in May, the small village celebrates around the church. Numerous fairground rides, stalls and food stalls attract visitors and locals alike.

June

  • Concert at Sea: What once began as a small regional event is now Zeeland's largest music festival. Renowned international and Zeeland artists perform on the beach in Brouwerdam over two days.

August

  • Nazomerfestival: This event in the centre of Walcheren is called the Late Summer Festival. Theatre plays from the Netherlands, live music and special performances for children are presented in the abbey courtyard and other venues.
