Top tips

  • Located on the Tyrrhenian Sea, a dog-friendly campsite on the fine sandy shores of Tuscany makes for a relaxing beach holiday. The Etruscan Coast between Livorno and Piombino offers tranquil villages as well as numerous stretches of beach where your favourite four-legged friend is also very welcome. One popular dog beach, for example, is the Dog Beach San Vincenzo. Here, furry friends can romp around undisturbed and numerous amenities such as dog showers and fresh water points are available.
  • Nothing stands in the way of cultural activities on holiday with a dog in Tuscany either. Numerous museums in the region are open to four-legged friends. For example, dogs are very welcome in the exhibition centres in Castiglione della Pescaia or Massa Marittima.
  • The tranquil town of Lucca is considered one of the most dog-friendly towns in Italy. In the pretty old town, holidaymakers travelling with their pets will find numerous walking opportunities and extensive green spaces where their four-legged friends can meet new playmates.

Activities and excursions

Whether beach or culture: Tuscany has something to offer for all interests on holiday with a dog. Meanwhile, the hinterland beckons with fantastic hiking tours through vineyards and forests.

Culture and sightseeing with a dog in Florence

One of the most popular excursion destinations in Tuscany is undoubtedly the regional capital of Florence, which impresses with its medieval maze of streets and imposing Renaissance masterpieces. In addition to the Duomo with its golden dome, which can be admired from the cathedral square, there are also numerous sights here where pets are also allowed. These include, for example, the Forte di Belvedere fortress, which offers a unique view over the city. Meanwhile, the winding alleyways of the historic city centre invite you to take a walk with your four-legged companion in an impressive setting.

Actively discover nature

The terraced vineyards and the diverse landscape are best discovered on foot when camping with a dog in Tuscany. A popular circular hiking trail, for example, leads from the dog-friendly town of Lucca along Monte Corchia, which is known for its numerous caves. The former pastoral settlement of Puntato with its stone huts is also on the way. The Chianti region between Florence and Siena, with its typical vineyards, cypress forests and historic farmhouses, boasts some delightful routes. Beautiful routes can be found along the Strada Chiantigiana wine route, for example.

In the footsteps of the past

Along the Tuscan coast, there are numerous pretty villages that invite you to immerse yourself in the history of the region. The Etruscan town of Orbetello on the Monte Argentario peninsula is particularly worth a visit when on holiday with a dog. In addition to the Piazza di Due Mondi with its impressive bell tower, the archaeological museum is also open to four-legged friends. Numerous historical artefacts dating back to the era of Roman civilisation and the Etruscan period can be admired here.

Events

From flower festivals to historical medieval festivals, the events in Tuscany that guests like to attend with their dogs are numerous.

April

  • Flower festival in Lucca: Just in time for the start of the camping season, guests can expect to see blooming rhododendrons, azaleas and other plants at the flower festival in Lucca in the historic Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and the square in front of the church of San Frediano.

June - July

  • Monteriggioni Medieval Festival: On three days in June and July, the Medieval Festival in Monteriggioni attracts visitors with knight tournaments in splendid costumes, historical crafts and traditional cuisine.

May - August

  • Balestro del Girifalco: This festival in Massa Marittima brings together the best marksmen in the region. Crossbowmen in historical costumes compete twice a year in Piazza Garibaldi. The parade in medieval costumes is also worth seeing.
